This is what happens when Daina and Josh's tastes actually line up: a massive total for Dua Lipa & BLACKPINK, shooting them to the top with "Kiss and Make Up". This is now a record-extending 5th #1 for Dua Lipa and continues her streak of all her top 10s going #1. BLACKPINK pick up their 1st #1 as "Kiss and Make Up" becomes the first song in a foreign language to hit #1, besting Orelsan's "Basique," which peaked at #2. Last piece of trivia is that this is Dua Lipa's first #1 without the help of Breagh Lipa. Jess Glynne stays in the top ten for another week as "All I Am" rockets back up to #2, also thanks to Daina and Josh. Carly Rae Jepsen pushes closer to the top as "Party For One" jumps to #4, her first top 5. Ariana Grande picks up a 5th top ten with "thank u, next," a surprise-drop post-breakup song that is set to debut at #1 in the US this week. Finally, we have see Ellie Goulding get her first top ten with "Close to Me," thanks to Emily. This is also Swae Lee's first top ten and Diplo's 2nd.
Looks like we cleaned house this week and purged a lot of old songs as there are many debuts to talk about. First of all, this is the first time every song that appeared on last week's Bubbling Under then debuted on this week's chart. They were led by Robyn's "Ever Again" at #17. No thanks to Daina, Marina and the Diamonds finally made her debut on the chart with "Baby," her new collaboration with Clean Bandit and Luis Fonsi. While Daina did not listen to it this week, she has been told about the release now and is sure to have a hand in the fate of the song in the coming weeks. Anther notable debut is the lesbian anthem, "Pussy Is God" by King Princess. She previously hit the top 10 with "1950," a favorite of Emm!e's. A curious debut is Andy Gibb's 1978 #1 US hit, "Shadow Dancing," which makes the chart thanks to Josh finding a wicked hot poster of Gibb this past week.
Emm!e, Sara, and Celina failed to influence the chart this week as they either listened to nothing or listened to their songs only once. Emily not only added to the total for "Close to Me" but also gave Ellie Goulding another chart entry as "Codes" debuts at #39. She also got "We Can't Move to This" and "I Do What I Love" on the Bubbling Under. Breagh listened to Shannon and the Clams almost exclusively, getting "Ozma" on the Bubbling Under at #4. Catie continued her Backstreet Boys obsession, getting two more songs to chart this week, "Get Another Boyfriend" and "Larger Than Life".
Next week, we see new releases from Little Mix, Cheryl, and former chart topper, Sufjan Stevens. It's a pretty quiet week as artists prepare their major releases for Black Friday and the holidays. Will Daina continue to dominate the top of the charts or will a new song rule? If so, which one? There are many new songs ready to pounce, they just need the backing of a few in Braintree. Celina finally has her car back, so she's surely going to be a player next week. We'll sure what happens next week on the Braintree Top 40!
Here is this week's Bubbling Under:
1. LSD - Mountains (with Sia, Diplo & Labrinth)
2. Foster the People - Worst Nites
3. Ellie Goulding - We Can't Move to This
4. Shannon and the Claims - Ozma
5. Ellie Goulding - I Do What I Love
