the cm70 - February 11, 2016

New #1!

5 debuts!

Notes:

  • "Looking Up" reclaims the top spot this week with a 5th week atop the chart. SafetySuit had an outstanding week, picking up their other two songs, while debuting a new one (will get to that later), on top of this getting back to #1. Their tour has really helped them get momentum back (not that they lost it or anything). This ends "Falling Apart"'s (1-2) reign at 3 weeks, but the next few weeks should really be between these two for the top spot.
  • DNCE continue their resurgence with "Cake By The Ocean" swimming into the Top 5, going 7-4 for a peak. This has done a complete 180 and has been doing superb. This actually has a shot at challenging for the top spot soon, but the Top 3 is a bit away.
  • "Don't" enters the Top 10 this week, going 11-9 for a new peak. This has had a nice easy ride to the Top 10 during its run, and is looking for more. If things were still based on plays, this would be a lot lower (only 38, whereas "Been That Way" has 52 at #59), so it's taking this opportunity to the fullest. The big reason this has done so well with limited plays is because this is always stuck in my head. I sing this (among others) in my head many times throughout the day.
  • "Tipping Point" also climbs into the Top 10, going 12-10 for a new peak. This sort of took its time to get to the Top 10, taking 13 weeks. When it first debuted, I was expecting it to take longer, but the entry is more than welcomed! Both this and "Don't" should peak similarly, but this might be able to outdo it if it can hold in the Top 10 for a few more weeks.
  • Charles Kelley has yet another big week. With his album The Driver being released this week, he got some big boosts. "The Driver" moves 17-15 for a new peak. Top 10 is looking likely and should get there in a few weeks. "Dancing Around It" blasts 51-42 for a new peak. This has been red hot since its debut and should continue to do well as an album track. This has future Top 10 written on it, but how long it will take to get there is a mystery. "Lonely Girl" also picks up 55-51 for a new peak. It could enter the Top 50 next week, but it might not be able to get too high up unless it gets announced as a single.
  • "Heartbeat" enters the Top 20 this week, going 25-20 for a new peak. This has been climbing nicely since its debut and should continue to do so into the Top 10. Next week can be a potential blowup week with her Grammys performance on Monday, which is a duet with Sam Hunt. If there is a version between the two, where Sam Hunt's vocals are more prominent, released, she could see a huge week from the combined points. Nonetheless, it should benefit from the performance regardless of a new version or not.
  • "Yours" moves into the Top 40 by going 47-40 for a new peak. This has been moving swimmingly since its debut, but things should slow down now. This should still be a big hit on the chart, but it should start to take its time now.
  • ZAYN has a big second week with "PILLOWTALK" flying 63-54 for a new peak. This had a lower debut last week, but this week it was given its chance to spread its wings. This might actually be a big hit for Zayn, potentially a Top 20.
  • "Pink Cocaine" also takes a leap this week, moving 65-58 for a new peak. This has having a good second run already and is now looking to end up peaking somewhere in the middle of "101" (15-12) and "1 AM" (31). Though, this does have big breakout potential.
  • The top debut this week belongs to Duke Dumont with "Ocean Drive" at #61. I heard this song in Dirty Grandpa when I saw it a few weeks ago, and I had no clue what the song was. I was too late to Shazam it, so I just had to keep singing it in my head. I recognized the "don't say a word while we dance with the devil" part, but for some reason, it didn't pop up on Google. Someone through IMDb was able to help me, and God am I gracious for that. This song is simply outstanding and has a bright future ahead of it. I really hope this can breakout on pop radio because it's great.
  • SafetySuit takes a really low debut this week with "Pause" at #63, something that was not expected, especially for a SafetySuit song. It's not really their new single, more just a promo single for the album, but still. They had premiered three new songs live, this, and two others called "Numbers or Faith" and "Beat of Your Heart". This was my least favorite of the three by far, but I still like it. This should be a grower on me, and should result in a better peak. Had the release gone to one of the other two, they likely would have been Top 3 debuts, potentially #1 debuts, but hey, a debut is a debut. This should probably stay on the chart until the album comes out, and if the album doesn't come out for awhile and no other song gets released, this should be the proper follow-up to "Looking Up".
  • Another movie debut happens this week, as "Time Out" by: Raphael Lake & Aaron Levy debut at #65. This was in Blue Mountain State: The Rise of Thadland (disappointing movie for an outstanding show) and was the highlight of the movie for me. I don't really know much about the artists on this, as I have no clue who is singing. I mean, this is apart of a genre playlist album on iTunes (you know, one of those Workout mixes and whatnot). This has super autotuned vocals and cheesy lyrics, a recipe for disaster, but something about it is really catchy and great. This might be able to do well, but right now, there's not a concrete prediction. It could blossom or burn, who knows. There was actually another song I liked from the movie, but I couldn't get it to Shazam, so who knows, maybe that'll pop up!
  • With the three recurrents this week, "Hymn For The Weekend" and "Since You Been Gone" make debuts at #68 and #70 respectively. Both weren't really looking to debut this week, but they got in due to the drops. The former got some Super Bowl hype, but should in no way hinder "Adventure of a Lifetime" (16-14). The latter should grow on the chart for awhile. I can see it lasting for a long time, but I'm not sure how high it can go. Time will tell.
