Whilst the top 2 in this week's chart is static, we see more action lower down the top 10 as four songs climb in for the first time. The highest of them all is this week's highest new entry, courtesy of American DJ trio Cheat Codes. The group, consisting of Matthew Russell, Kevin Ford and lead vocalist Trevor Dahl, have scored #1s with all three of their chart hits. This week sees one of their older songs enter. Adventure, released in collaboration with Evan Gartner, was released in 2015, although I hadn't heard it until last weekend. Why has it entered? Well I heard it in an episode of Teen Wolf (an episode I'd seen before, must've passed me by the first time!), and recognised the familiar vocals, so I checked it out in full and it's really great.
Climbing 14 places to #6 this week is Miley Cyrus with her new single Malibu. The song entered at #14 in its first week, and it finally surpasses that position, becoming Miley's highest position in my chart to date. Previously, her personal best was Fall Down with will.i.am, which made #8, with both We Can't Stop and Wrecking Ball being her solo best at #9.
One Direction were pretty much guaranteed hits in my chart, holding the joint record for most #1 hits (11, tied by The Vamps just weeks ago), but as solo artists they've had varying degrees of success. Niall Horan scored a #5 hit with This Town last year, but Slow Hands got off to a, well, slow start. It debuted at #27, but after a few weeks hanging around the lower regions, it soared up to #12 last week following his One Love Manchester performance and climbs even higher this week, giving Niall a second solo top 10 - actually becoming the first One Direction member to score a second solo top 10!
The final new song in my top 10 comes from last week's "one to watch". David Guetta's teamed up with Justin Bieber for new single 2U, and together they both achieve a new top 10, as it debuts at #10. Guetta's had three previous top 10s, including #1 hit Shed a Light, while Bieber's had 24 previous top 10s, a record in my chart! Seven of those songs made #1 - Boyfriend, Turn To You, As Long As You Love Me, What Do You Mean?, Sorry, Cold Water and Let Me Love You. 2U outpeaks both of his recent collaborations, I'm the One with DJ Khaled (#11) and Despacito with Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee (#13).
This week's highest climber comes from American singer/songwriter Alec Benjamin. Alec scored his first hit last year with #16 hit End of the Summer, and followed it up with #34 hit I Built a Friend. The latter re-enters following an official release (previously it had only been available on Soundcloud), and soars this week to a new peak of #18, just two spots off being his personal best.
Singer/actress Martine McCutcheon makes her chart debut this week, as the surprisingly great Say I'm Not Alone debuts at #31. She's the only other artist, alongside Evan Gartner, to make her chart debut this week, although American boyband Citizen Four score only their second hit with Want You Back at #23.
