TikTok has allowed many indie artists to breakout and reach the official charts. These hits include the global hit “Water” by Tyla or the recent “I Like the Way You Kiss Me” by Artemas. Another breakout TikTok-hit now resurged on the charts: “Good Luck, Babe!” by Chappel Roan. But the write her off as a basic TikTok act, would do this American talent a great injustice. Inspired by drag queens and taking inspiration from 1980s pop, Chappel Roan has a vision. Her vocals are very reminiscent of Marina. Described by Billboard as a "well-deserved breakthrough", “Good Luck, Babe!” tells the story of a lesbian woman who tries to hide her sexuality. It now peaks at Number 1 on my personal chart, her very first chart-topper to date. It took the single twelve weeks to reach the peak position, the second longest climb to Number 1 for any single this year, only behind Noah Kahan’s “Stick Season” which needed fourteen weeks.
At the start of the 2020s, English singer Jessie Ware pivoted to a disco-oriented sound on her critically acclaimed album What’s Your Pleasure. It helped establish a devoted fanbase and earned Ware several Brit Award nominations. She continued that sound on That! Feels Good!, her most recent album. Lead single “Free Yourself” became a sleeper hit on my personal chart, while her collaboration with Kylie Minogue “Kiss of Life” also became a Top 20-smash. Last weekend, Ware returned to the Netherlands to perform at Down The Rabbit Hole Festival. Aided by that dazzling diva performance, Ware secures the highest debut of the week with “Lift You Up”, a new single alongside Romy. We best know Romy from The XX, but lately, she has been making waves as a solo artist. Her cross-over “Strong” with Fred Again.. became a big #2-hit on my list. “Lift You Up” earns Jessie Ware her third Top 40-entry, while Romy her second as a solo star.
Jessie Ware is not the only artist who performed at Down The Rabbit Hole and now makes a debut on my chart – in fact, all new entries have travelled down to one of the Netherlands’ biggest festivals last weekend. British groove band Jungle line up their second Top 40-hit at #23 with “I’ve Been In Love” following their headlining billing. Further down, Olivia Dean scores her second Top 40-entry with the emotional “The Hardest Part”, taken from her debut album Messy. It previously spawned the minor hit “Dive” last year. The new single debuts at #27, already her highest-peaking single to date. British diva PinkPantheress debuts at #38 with “Turn It Up”, supported by her set in the Teddy.
Other singles from artists that performed at The Rabbit Hole now rebound or reach new peaks entirely as well. RAYE achieves her highest solo peak to date at #3 with the 7-minute-long triumph “Genesis”; her collaborations with D-Block Europe and 070 Shake reached Number 1. Her Top 20-single “Worth It” also steadily remains in the Top 40 for an eighteenth week. Eefje de Visser rebounds back up with “Vlammen” following her acclaimed set at the Hotot main stage, proving the single its longevity. It has previously stalled at #11 for multiple weeks, her second single to barely miss the Top 10 following “De Parade”.
Dua Lipa also resurges again due to her performance at Rock Werchter, a big festival in Belgium, with “Illusion” returning to #10 and “Houdini” in the Top 20. With the latter back in the charts again, its on course to become one of the best-scoring hits of the 2020s so far. Only 9,000 points keep it from being in the decade-end Top 10. Leading that important list is “Stiekem” by Maan and Goldband. Their duet debuted atop my chart, led the list for eight consecutive weeks and became the first ever Dutch single to achieve diamond status. In second place ranks Goldband their big solo hit “Noodgeval”, which was a sleeper hit in the summer of 2022 following their Lowlands live set. In third place so far is Dua Lipa herself with the monstrous smash hit “Levitating”, a seven-week Number 1 and her biggest song this decade. Her single “Physical” is the fourth biggest song of the 2020s so far, while Harry Styles rounds out the Top 5 with “As It Was”. Very special shoutout to Harry Styles, as he ranks three songs in the decade-end ranking yet, with “Adore You” at #8 and “Watermelon Sugar” at #10 – that is, if Dua Lipa does not make Harry Styles disappear with “Houdini” soon.
