Addison Rae continues to become 2024’s most unlikely breakout star as “Diet Pepsi” finally moves to Number 1, earning the TikTok-star-turned-singer her first ever chart-topper. In 2021, she tried for pop stardom with “Obsessed”, a fumbled pop single that was panned by critics everywhere. While forced back to the drawing board, the TikTok-star her early material was leaked online, accidentally building a niche following. These songs were later released as AR, a small extended play that barely made any impact, yet, it featured Charli XCX on “2 Die 4”. With the help of Charli XCX and Taylor Swift-songwriter Elvira Anderfjärd, Addison Rae then released “Diet Pepsi” as her comeback to the music industry, introducing a more mature sound, now resulting in chart-topping success. Addison Rae joins the likes of Noah Kahan and Chappell Roan as 2024’s unlikely breakout stars. Even more impressive, while she takes over the summit from Sabrina Carpenter, she also earns a Top 10-debut with the new follow-up single “Aquamarine” at #10 – her biggest debut yet.
Fresh off the back of “Die with a Smile”, The Joker film and the new album Harlequin, Lady Gaga is now returning to her electro roots on the new “Disease”. It serves as the lead release for her upcoming new album. With cutting lyrics and a fresh electronic sounds, this harks back to her heyday smash hits such as “Judas” or “Bad Romance”. Her collaboration “Die With a Smile” with Bruno Mars peaked at Number 1 on my personal chart for two weeks, becoming her first chart-topper in over thirteen years, earning her the rare chart record for longest time between Number 1s. “Disease” settles for a debut at #16, her strongest solo debut since “Stupid Love” in 2020, which debuted at #15. Although she scored Top 10s and Number 1s with collaborations recently, it has been some time since Lady Gaga had a big solo hit, with her last solo Top 10-hit being 2013’s “Applause” at #8. But, as we’ve seen with Shakira and Kylie Minogue last year, a full-blown chart comeback is not unthinkable – we could be at the start of a Lady Gaga-revival with “Disease”.
Further down, Dutch girl group OGENE – previously OG3NE, having dropped the 3 – make their first chart appearance in nearly eight years with “Phenomenon” at #28. The sisters originally broke through as a kids music’ act in the Noughties, before returning as OG3NE and winning the Voice of Holland. They scored a big hit with “Clown” on my list and represented The Netherlands at Eurovision in 2017. Meanwhile, Mimi Webb continues to tease us her electro-influenced sophomore album with “One Eye Open” at #37. She was one of the most successful artists to emerge last year, scoring five Top 40-hits, including the gold-certified “Red Flags”. Her new upcoming project is yet to produce a significant hit, with the lead single “Mistake” stalling at #37. Perhaps, “One Eye Open” will fare better.
