The Netherlands’ official Eurovision entry “Europapa” by Joost Klein moves straight up to Number 1 for a sixth non-consecutive week. The song originally debuted atop my list and has since then become the highest-scoring Eurovision entry of all time, surpassing Anouk her “Birds” from 2013. The single, however, was disqualified from the Eurovision finals following a controversial altercation with some reporter backstage. The disqualification was met with online critique and outrage. In a press release statement, Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS stated that they were "shocked" and called the decision to disqualify Klein "very heavy and disproportionate". Its success post-Eurovision is the biggest out of all the entries so far though, surpassing the Swiss entry on Spotify.
TikTok has allowed many indie artists to breakout and reach the official charts. These hits include the global hit “Water” by Tyla or the recent “I Like the Way You Kiss Me” by Artemas. Another breakout TikTok-hit now resurged on the charts: “Good Luck, Babe!” by Chappel Roan. But the write her off as a basic TikTok act, would do this American talent a great injustice. Inspired by drag queens and taking inspiration from 1980s pop, Chappel Roan has a vision. Her vocals are very reminiscent of Marina. Described by Billboard as a "well-deserved breakthrough", “Good Luck, Babe!” tells the story of a lesbian woman who tries to hide her sexuality. It now reaches the Top 10 on my personal chart, finishing at #9 this week. It marks Chappel Roan her first Top 10-hit.
One of the more interesting career stories of the last decade has to be Charli XCX’s. The British singer scored her biggest global hit right off the bat with “I Love It” alongside Icona Pop in 2012. Some high profile collabs or soundtrack hits followed, including my personal Number 1 “Fancy”. In the years that followed, Charli went on to hone a precise niche of alt-pop music that is sometimes dubbed hyper pop, a genre coined by the late Sophie. Although it did not match the previous chart highs, it gave Charli something more important: a distinct fanbase and longevity. On my personal chart, the star has strung together several Top 40-sleeper hits, including highlights “Beg For You” and “Speed Drive”. She now follows with “360”, the third single for her upcoming album Brat. It earns the best debut of the week at #22. It beats its previous release “Von Dutch” with Addison Rae” its start position by a whopping eight spots.
Further down, Zoë Tauran and Jonna Fraser debut with their Dutch afrobeats single “Stiekem ‘24”. Its title could easily be mistaken as a reference to the diamond certified Number 1-hit “Stiekem” by Maan & Goldband. It actually references Fouradi his 2011 song “Stiekem” with Lange Frans. It marks Tauran her landmark tenth Top 40-hit to date, starting off at #26. British pop singer Mabel debuts at #37 with her big comeback single “Look At My Body, Pt. II”, a direct response directed to the online critics and tabloids. Mabel is supported by British rapper and producer ShyGirl, who makes her Top 40-debut on my list. Post Malone and Morgan Wallen round out the new entries at #39 with “I Had Some Help”, which became an immediate streaming hit upon release. Post Malone his most recent singles were all high-profile and successful collaborations, including Doja Cat and Taylor Swift. He is now joined by America’s biggest country star right now, Morgan Wallen.
