Best-selling and record-breaking girl group Girls Aloud make their long-awaited return to the list with their comeback single “Something New”, entering at Number 2 behind Olly Murs’s hit single “Troublemaker”

During the 2000s, one girl group ruled the decade with hit single after hit single. That group is, of course, Girls Aloud. The girl group was formed on the highly successful talent show “Popstars: The Rivals” in 2002. The group comprised singers Cheryl Tweedy, Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh. After winning the television show, Girls Aloud went on to score a number of chart-topping hits. The group is very successful in the United Kingdom, where they achieved a string of twenty consecutive Top 10-singles in the United Kingdom, including four Number 1s.

On this list, Girls Aloud their legacy is even bigger. The girl group scored eight Number 1s, making them the act with the third-most chart-toppers, only behind the Spice Girls and Britney Spears. All of the girls’ other singles reached the Top 10-position, earning Girls Aloud twenty-three Top 10-singles. Some of their biggest hits include “No Good Advice”, their cover of the Pointer Sisters’ “Jump”, Love Machine”, “Call the Shots” and “Something Kinda Oooh”.

Girls Aloud their biggest single remains “The Promise”. The single spent eight weeks at Number 1. The single earned over 160,000 points and achieved Diamond Status. The single holds as the second best-scoring single by a girl group in chart history, only behind the Spice Girls’ 1996-hit “Wannabe”. Girls Aloud went on hiatus in the end of 2009. Cheryl Tweedy later became a highly successful solo artist, aided by her Number 1s “Promise This”, “Call My Name”, “Parachute” and – most importantly – the Diamond certified “Fight For This Love”.

Girls Aloud now finally returns with their newest single and a greatest hits album. The girls will also go on tour. This week, Girls Aloud enter at Number 2 with “Something New”.
