Dua Lipa leads a very festive Top 40 this week with “Houdini”, entering a third consecutive week atop the list. The single debuted at Number 1 three weeks ago, earning Lipa her twelfth record-equaling chart-topper to date, tying with the Spice Girls as the act with the most Number 1s of all time. The Spice Girls have held the record since 1997 when “Spice Up Your Life” became their sixth Number 1-hit. “Houdini” faces competition though, as Jack Harlow moves up to second place with “Lovin On Me. The song ties with “First Class” as the American rapper his highest peak to date. If Harlow were to overtake Lipa next week, he would earn his first ever Number 1.
Inside the Top 10, Roxy Dekker reaches a new peak at #5 with “Satisfyer”. It’s the Dutch influencer and singer her best-performing single to date. Troye Sivan his “Got Me Started” also manages to reach new heights, finishing at #6 this week. Noah Kahan also continues to climb with his breakout “Stick Season”, settling at #8 with an increase in streaming figures. The Top 20 sees some changes as well – Tate McRae soars to #11 with “Exes”, the follow-up to her Number 1 smash “Greedy”. Taylor Swift rebounds with “Is It Over Now?” taken from her 1989 (Taylor’s Version) and Mitski makes her Top 20-debut as “My Love Mine All Mine” peaks at #19.
One of Belgium’s biggest stars of the year is, without a doubt, Pommelien Thijs. Since her breakout role on #LikeMe, she has kickstarted a very successful musical career in Flemish Belgium and released her debut album Per Ongeluk. On this list, “Erop of Eronder” became a sleeper hit, managing to peak at #2 nearly four months after its initial release. This week, she scores the highest debut of the week with the follow-up single “Medeplichtig”. The song continues the sound she has established on her debut album and is recognizably influenced by Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift. “Medeplichtig” debuts at #13 ahead of the Christmas chaos. It marks the Belgian pop star her third Top 40-hit.
The festive seasons kicks into gear as multiple holiday classics flood the Top 40. Mariah Carey’s classic “All I Want For Christmas” leads at #25, a gain of fourteen places. Michael Bublé re-enters at #30 with “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas”, which was last year’s best-performing Christmas single. Ariana Grande follows at #35 with “Santa Tell Me”, Sam Fender re-enters at #38 with “Winter Song” and Kelly Clarkson rounds out the Top 40 with “Underneath the Three”. Amidst all the Christmas chaos, Dutch singer S10 debuts at #23 her double-sided single “Mis / “Alsof Het Weer Gisteren Is”. It becomes her eighth Top 40-entry on my chart and her first solo entry since she has released her sophomore album.
To celebrate the holiday season fast approaching, I have decided to rank the biggest Christmas hits of all time on my personal list. To no surprise, Mariah Carey crowns the ranking with “All I Want For Christmas”. Since its debut in 1995, the single has had seventeen separate chart runs during the festive season. It peaked at #3 in 1997 and matched that peak in 2016. It is almost always the best-performing song of the season. It is currently certified triple-platinum and ranks as Carey’s biggest hit to date. Band Aid place second with the charity single “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”, which had its most successful chart run in 2007. Ariana Grande ranks third with her modern classic “Santa Tell Me”, which peaked at #3 in 2014 and has re-entered the chart every Christmas season since 2018.
