Dutch newcomer Antoon scores his first Number 1-hit with “Hyperventilatie”

Dutch rapper Antoon climbs to Number 1 on this week’s chart with “Hyperventilatie” following a very close race for the top spot. The young talent has been working towards success for a long time now. At age fifteen, he became the youngest applicant to be accepted at the renowned Herman Brood Academy. Initially, Antoon focussed primarily on EDM, but later found interest in disco and hip hop. In 2020, he released his debut EP Heilig Water, which became a small success on streaming services. This year, the rapper finally made his well-deserved big break, as “Hyperventilatie” went viral on TikTok and became an overnight success. Antoon dethrones Olivia Rodrigo’s “good 4 u”, which spent six non-consecutive weeks atop the list, and prevents Dua Lipa’s “Love Again” from returning to Number 1.

British singer Mabel moves up to Number 4 with “Let Them Know”, the first single of her upcoming sophomore album which is written by RAYE and MNEK. Calvin Harris and Tom Grennan only nearly miss out on a Top 5-peak with their summer banger “By Your Side”, while Mimi Webb moves up one place with her breakout hit “Good Without”. Just outside the Top 10, Doja Cat and The Weeknd jump to Number 12 with their newest collaboration “You Right”, while Ed Sheeran’s “Bad Habits” makes a leap into the Top 20. Meanwhile, OneRepublic’s “Run” could become the band their first Top 20-peak since 2016’s “Wherever I Go”, as their newest song peaks at Number 24 this week.

Aided by the success of “Hyperventilatie”, Antoon also claims the highest new entry of the week with his 2020-single “Leuk”, taken from his debut EP Heilig Water. The song features rapper and producer Big2, who is a member of The Opposites and the co-founder of the record label Dreamteam. With The Opposites, Big2 scored a string of big hits, most notably “Dom, Lomp en Famous” [#4] and “Slapeloze Nachten” [#9]. Upon initial release, “Leuk” was only a minor success across streaming services, but as Antoon went viral on TikTok, the song has resurged and is becoming another big hit for the young talent. The song debuts at Number 21 this week.

Three other songs make their debut this week. At Number 27, The Voice-contestant Becky Hill and hit-producer David Guetta enter with “Remember”, the new single from Hill’s upcoming debut album. The British singer has previously scored a string of hits across Europe, including “Gecko (Overdrive)” and “Lose Control”. At Number 35, Luke Hemmings makes his solo debut with “Starting Line”. As the lead singer of 5 Seconds of Summer, the Australian singer has scored thirteen Top 40-hits, which include two Number 1s: “Youngblood” and “Teeth”. At Number 40, we meet the Dutch newcomer Remme with “The Moment”. The young singer made his debut on Eurosonic Noorderslag last year with “Get Older”, which was met with praise from Dutch critics.

00s hit-girl group Atomic Kitten made their unexpected comeback this week, as they reworked their breakout song “Whole Again” into a new football anthem for Euro 2020: “Southgate You're The One - Football's Coming Home Again”. The song features new vocals from Jenny Frost, who did not take part in earlier reunions. To celebrate the girls’ surprising return, I have decided to take a look at their chart history. Between 2001 and 2003, Atomic Kitten scored six consecutive Top 10-hits, which include three Number 1s: “Whole Again”, their cover of the Bangles’ “Eternal Flame” and their cover of Blondie’s “The Tide Is High (Get the Feeling)”. In total, the girl group scored fourteen Top 40-hits, making them one of the most successful girl groups of the 00s, only behind Girls Aloud and the Sugababes. For a full list of Atomic Kitten their biggest hits, see the Top 10 below this chart.
