It’s Kylie vs. Peggy Gou in this week’s race for Number 1

Supported by big streaming figures and an amazing set at No Art Festival in Amsterdam, DJ Peggy Gou leaps to Number 1 with her  new single “It Goes Like (Nanana)”. The dance-pop song is a full on vintage rave record with a summer synth that has shades of Eurodance. It is very reminiscent of summer hits of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Before its official release, the single already caught viral attention, which is not surprising, as Gou already has a devoted internet fanbase. As “It Goes Like (Nanana)” reaches its new peak, Peggy Gou becomes only the second ever South Korean artist to collect a Number 1-hit. The first was Psy in 2012 with “Gangnam Style”. Peggy Gou dethrones Little Mix’s Leigh-Anne, who made a Number 1-debut last week with her first solo song “Don’t Say Love”.

Miley Cyrus has been on an unstoppable roll lately – Miley Cyrus moves into the Top 10 with “Jaded”, peaking at #9 this week. The pop rock song serves as the third official single of Cyrus her latest album Endless Summer Vacation. It was preceded by the Top 10-smash hits “Flowers” and “River”, of which the former peaked at Number 1 for five consecutive weeks. Boosted by an increase in streaming figures, “Jaded” finally pushes into the Top 10. It marks Cyrus her seventeenth Top 10-hit on my personal chart.

Closely behind is Becky G with “Arranca”, peaking at #10 this week. Becky G has enjoyed an unlikely career so far. In the early 2010s, the American singer found viral success with collaborations with Cher Lloyd and Cody Simpson. She then had an international breakout in 2014 with “Shower”, which peaked at #10 on my personal chart. Her focus then shifted to Latin reggaeton, which resulted in the massively successful “Sin Pijama”. Becky G now returns with “Arranca”, marking her first Top 10-appearnece in over nine years. She is supported by Dominican singer Omega.

Barbie is everywhere! – Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice score the top debut of the week with “Barbie World”. It is the third single of the soundtrack to the upcoming Barbie film starring Margot Robbie. Nicki Minaj is an obvious choice for the single, as her fans are called the Barbz, while newcomer Ice Spice is fresh off her Number 1-hit “Boy’s a Liar”. Their new “Barbie World” samples Aqua their iconic 1997-single “Barbie”, which went to #2 on my personal list and topped many worldwide charts. They are credited on this new remix, earning the Europop band their fifth Top 40-appearance. Nicki Minaj earns her thirty-eighth (very impressive) while Ice Spice collects her third. “Barbie World” enters at #21.

Further down, Taylor Swift enters at #25 with “Cruel Summer”. The song was originally included on her 2019 album Lover and quickly became a fan favourite. Then this summer, the song went viral across the internet and became a surprise streaming success. Following an official single release, Swift’s “Cruel Summer” looks very sunny after all. Meanwhile, The Jonas Brothers return with “Waffle House” at #30. It marks the boy their first appearance on my chart since 2021’s “Leave Before You Love Me”. Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar enter with “America Has a Problem” at #36 – it has recently been released as the third official single from Renaissance. It has been some time since Kendrick Lamar last charted – which dates back to 2018’s massive #2-hit “All the Stars”. UK rappers Dave and Central Cee round out all the debuts with “Sprinter” at #40.
