Natalie Imbruglia fends off All Saints and the Spice Girls to climb to her first ever Number 1-hit

Natalie Imbruglia defeats tough competition and climbs towards her first ever Number 1-hit with Torn. The song has become a massive hit within only five weeks. Natalie Imbruglia is the second Australian singer to peak above the list, following Gina G with Ooh Aah… Just a Little Bit in July 1996. Natalie Imbruglia fends off strong competition from the Spice Girls, whom she dethrones after they spent seven weeks at Number 1 with Spice Up Your Life. All Saints also fight Natalie Imbruglia her reign with Never Ever.

1997 has been Eternal their most successful year so far. The British girl group scored a big Number 1-hit with I Wanna Be The Only One alongside BeBe Williams, which spent one week above the list and amassed over 74,000 points. The girls now score their second Top 10-entry of the year with Angel of Mine. In total, the girls have scored four Top 10-entries starting with Baby I… in February 1995. Their newest single peaks at Number 9 this week.

Robert Miles scores the highest debut of the week. The Swiss-born Italian record producer started his career with Children in early 1996. The single became a dance-hit and later topped the charts in many countries. By the beginning of 1997, Children had sold more than 5 million copies worldwide. On this list, Children was a massive success as well. The song spent three consecutive weeks at Number 2, spent thirteen weeks within the Top 10 and amassed over 91,000 points. He then scored a small hit with One & One alongside singer Maria Nayler. His newest single Freedom is met with high anticipation and debuts at Number 20 this week. The song features Kathy Sledge, known from the girl group Sister Sledge. His newest debut marks his first appearance in a year.

The Backstreet Boys celebrate a Gold Certification for As Long As You Love Me. The song became their sixth Top 10-entry in their extensive repertoire, following big successes such as I’ll Never Break Your Heart and Everybody (Backstreet’s Back). The single peaked at Number 4 and, as of this week, has amassed over 40,000 points. This is the boys’ sixth Gold certification.
