Sam Fender rises to Number 1 with “Spit of You”, earning the North Shields-singer his fourth chart-topper

One of the most successful and acclaimed new talents to debut in the last five years, has to be English singer-songwriter Sam Fender. After scoring a minor Top 40-song with “Play God” in 2019, the North Shields-born singer soon skyrocketed to the top with “Hypersonic Missiles” and his debut album of the same name. The album became one of my most-streamed albums of all time. This year, Sam Fender released his highly anticipated second studio album Seventeen Going Under, which was met with universal acclaim and topped the UK Album Charts. Its lead single of the same name reached Number 1 and recently went viral on TikTok. This week, the album its fourth single, “Spit of You”, finally climbs to Number 1 after spending five weeks in the Top 3. It marks the singer his fourth chart-topper on this list. Sam Fender dethrones Adele’s “Easy on Me”, which spent six consecutive weeks atop the chart.

Dutch indie singer Meau takes a massive leap into the Top 3 with “Dat Heb Jij Gedaan”, which moves up fifteen places after debuting at Number 18 last week. The singer-songwriter has been putting out independent music for some time now and has been slowly building a solid fanbase for herself. Her music is similar to Eefje de Visser or Holly Humberstone. Following her steady rise to critical success, her newest single “Dat Heb Jij Gedaan” was quickly picked up by radio stations. She recently peaked at Number 2 in the Dutch Spotify Top 50 and scored her first Top 40-hit in the national hit parade. If Meau were to further increase her streaming numbers, she could dethrone Sam Fender’s “Spit of You” next week.

Kris Kross Amsterdam, Antoon and Sigourney K. race towards Number 25 with their newest collaboration “Vluchtstrook”, earning them the highest debut of the week. The single samples “Have You Ever Been Mellow?” by the Party Animals, which peaked atop the Dutch charts in 1996. Kris Kross Amsterdam previously translated or sampled classic 90s hits into Dutch hits, such as “The Boy is Mine”, “Toen Ik Je Zag” or “Een Moment Zonder Jou”. This time, the DJs are aided by popular Dutch singers Sigourney K. and Antoon, of whom the latter scored a triple-platinum Number 1-hit with “Hyperventilatie” on my list earlier this year.

Further down, American singer Gayle makes her chart debut with “abcdfu”, entering at Number 30. The single recently went viral on TikTok and has been taking off on many charts worldwide. At Number 35, Norwegian pop icon Sigrid enters the list with “Home to You (This Christmas”. The single was originally released for the soundtrack of the 2019-film The Aeronauts, but was recently reworked to become a holiday song. The Christmas song becomes Sigrid her landmark tenth Top 40-entry. Mariah Carey closes off the Top 40 with “All I Want for Christmas”, which re-enters the chart for its forty-first week of charting. It re-enters my list almost every December and is one of the most-successful and longest-charting songs of all time.

With Christmas right around the corner, I have decided to take a look at the biggest holiday hits on my personal chart. Every December sees the return of Christmas classics, aided by streaming success, while modern songs slowly scale the Top 40. The highest-scoring Christmas single of all time is, perhaps without surprise, “All I Want for Christmas” by Mariah Carey. The holiday hit peaked at Number 3 in 1997, three years after its release, and was certified double-platinum in 2019. Band Aid 20’s charity single “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” is the second highest-scoring Christmas song of all time. It peaked at Number 7 in 2005 and has continuously entered my list ever since. British singer claims the third highest-scoring Christmas song with her cover of Joni Mitchell’s “River”, which peaked at Number 7 on my personal list and peaked atop the UK Singles Chart in 2019. Other Christmas classics include “Santa Tell Me” by Ariana Grande, “Shake Up Christmas” by Train and “Mistletoe” by Justin Bieber. For the full Top 10 of my personal highest-scoring Christmas hits, check the list below this chart.

Hey Link! I love Spit of You getting your #1! It was the first Sam Fender song I listened to you and I quite like it! I also love the climb for Better Days! The entries for abcdefu and Home To You (This Christmas) as well as the re-entry for Mariah's classic is awesome too! Great chart, have a nice weekend!

Hey Conor! “Spit of You” is a great tune and easily one of my favourite releases of this year. I’m happy you like it too! Dermot Kennedy’s “Better Days” is really growing on me, I think it could reach the Top 20 next week. Gayle’s “abcdefu” is also rising and the Christmas songs are definitely going to jump up! Thank you so much for the comment :)

What a journey for Adele finally drops after 6 weeks impressive run.im hyping to see All i want for Christmas is you might be number one this year .interested to see. I like seeing Mabel and Joel Corry steady in the top 10.Like the huge jump of No love man i love that song impressed by the move.Like seeing Sigrid impacting this week.
Enjoy your weeknd

Hey Brandy! Thank you so much for the comment. Adele had a great run with “Easy on Me” and it will probably stick around the Top 10 for a couple of weeks. “All I Want for Christmas” is a great song, but I wonder if it’ll reach Number 1 this year, as she has some stiff competition. Mabel & Joel Corry are very steady and “No Love” should jump up next week! I really like both songs. Have a great week!

Hi there Link!
Nice to see "Spit Of You" at the top, the debut for "Home To You (This Christmas)" and the return for "All I Want For Christmas Is You".
Great chart!

Hey Sergej! Thank you so much for the comment. “Spit of You” is one of my favourite songs released this year! I’m happy to see you like it too. Sigrid’s “Home to You” is really growing on me and I think it could reach the Top 10 by Christmas. Same for Mariah’s classic! Have a great week :)

Hey Link! :)
I love seeing 'Spit Of You' climb to #1 this week, along with the debuts for 'ABCDEFU' & 'Home To You [This Christmas]', as well as the re-entry for 'All I Want For Christmas Is You'.
Amazing chart as usual!
I look forward to the next one.
Have a nice week ahead!

Hey Piran! Thank you so much for the comment. “Spit of You” is one of my favourite songs of this year and, probably, my favourite song off Seventeen Going Under. Sigrid and Gayle are really growing on me and are probably going to rise up next week! Maybe “Home to You” can crack the Top 10 by Christmas time. Have a nice week!
