Spice Girls score a seventh week at Number 1 + Gold and Platinum Certifications + 5 x Platinum Certification for “Wannabe”

The Spice Girls celebrate a seventh week at Number 1 with Who Do You Think You Are. The hit receives a Platinum Certification, as it has scored more than 65,000 points. This is the girls’ fourth single to achieve this feat. The other side of their double-sided single, Mama, receives a Gold Certification, as it has scored more than 40,000 points. This is the girls’ fifth single to achieve this feat.

The Spice Girls receive a 5 x Platinum Certification for their massive hit Wannabe. The hit has scored over 160,000 points. The single climbed to Number 1 on the 30th of August 1996 and went on to crown to list for ten weeks. This was the beginning of the Spice Girls’ reign, as Say You’ll Be There and 2 Become 1 followed consecutively. To this date, Wannabe is the best-scoring single by a female act of all time. Overall, Wannabe is the second-best-scoring single of all time, only behind Het Is Een Nacht… (Levensecht) by Guus Meeuwis & Vagant. If they were to score approximately 6,000 points more, the Spice Girls’ debut single would become the best-scoring single of all time.

Jan Smit scores his first Top 10-entry. The young Dutch singer is only eleven years old, but he still manages to score a hit. His single Ik zing dit lied voor jou alleen is a cover of the original by German singer Andrea Jürgens from 1978. Jan Smit covered the single for his recently deceased grandmother. In the Netherlands and in Belgium, the single peaked at Number 1. On this list, Jan Smit peaks at Number 9 this week.

Robbie Williams scores the highest debut of the week. The English singer was a member of the massively successful boy group Take That, before leaving in July 1995. With Take That, Robbie Williams scored big hits such as Back For Good, which was the best-scoring single of 1995, and Never Forget. After Robbie Williams left Take That, he ventured onto a solo career. He released his first solo-hit in August 1996, being Freedom. The song debuted at Number 1 on this list, keeping former bandmate Gary Barlow’s Forever Love off the top. Robbie Williams went on to receive a Platinum Certification for his hit, making him the most successful Take That-member as a soloist on this list to date. His newest single, which has a lot to live up to, is Old Before I Die and debuts at Number 11.
