Tate McRae’s “Greedy” stays at Number 1 with an expanding lead

Baby please believe her! – Tate McRae enters a second week at Number 1 with the infectious “Greedy”. The single shot to the top last week, earning the Canadian pop star her first chart-topper on my personal list. The song has become an overnight viral success, especially on TikTok, where it is a part of the Tube Girl trend. “Greedy” its lead on its competitors has increased, outperforming Doja Cat’s “Paint the Town Red” nearly two-to-one. Doja has to settle for second best again for a fourth week in a row. It is now the single with the most weeks at #2 this year so far, surpassing Purple Disco Machine’s “Substitution” and Nicki & Ice’s “Barbie World” which both spent three consecutive weeks at #2 without making it to the top.

Inside the Top 10, Pommelien Thijs rises to new solo heights with her national smash “Erop of Eronder”, peaking at #3. It marks the Belgian talent her highest peak as a solo artist to date. Irish producer Jazzy and Billie Eilish their respective hits, “Giving Me” and “What Was I Made For?” both comfortably stay inside the Top 10 for another week. SZA re-enters the Top 10 with “Snooze”, the sixth official single of her album SOS. It is boosted by an acoustic remix featuring Justin Bieber, which allows the Canadian pop star his twenty-first Top 10-entry on my personal chart – and his first since 2021’s “Stay” with The Kid Laroi.

Further down inside the Top 40, Fred Again.. eyes a spot inside the Top 10 with “Adore U”, which re-peaks at #11 for a third non-consecutive week. Luke Combs his cover of  “Fast Car” proves to be a bit of a sleeper hit, as the single reaches #14 this week. The remixed version of Tracy Chapman’s original by Jonas Blue peaked at #8 back in 2016. Suzan & Freek their cross-over “Vas-Y” with Claude reaches #15, while Zach Bryan and Kacey Musgraves their haunting country ballad “I Remember Everything” closely follows at #16. Doja Cat soars into the Top 20 with “Agora Hills”, the official follow-up to her current Number 2-hit “Paint the Town Red”.

In the age of the internet, a lot more world music is able to reach a bigger audience and enter the official charts. Big examples this decade include Rema’s “Calm Down” or Ayra Starr’s “Rush”. Another African pop star has crossed over to the west: South-African pop star Tyla, who earlier this year toured across Europe with Chris Brown. Tyla is helped by viral success on TikTok. The song also combines the more traditional Afrobeats sound – heard on Libianca’s “People” for example – with more mellow R&B from the West, reminiscent of water itself. The song becomes the highest debut of the week at #18, earning Tyla her first Top 40-hit.

Further down, Afrobeats icon Burna Boy debuts with “City Boys”. The song is included on the Nigerian hit singer his seventh studio album I Told Them… His last Top 40-appearance on my list was the major smash “Last, Last”, which marked Burna Boy his highest peak ever. “City Boys” enters at #24 this week. Ed Sheeran debuts at #36 with “American Town”, an album track from his surprise seventh studio album Autumn Variations. It marks another low-charting single for the English pop star – all his recent solo songs have failed to crack the Top 20 or missed the charts entirely. Fresh new talent PinkPantheress rounds out the new debuts with “Mosquito” at #39. It earns the English Y2K-star her third Top 40-song.
