The Spice Girls make an enormous debut at Number 1 with the R&B-ballad Too Much. The single has only been available for three days, yet it still manages to debut above the list. Too Much marks the Spice Girls their seventh consecutive chart-topper. The girls’ reign started with Wannabe in August 1996, followed by Say You’ll Be There in November 1996, 2 Become 1 in December 1996, Who Do You Think You Are in March 1997, Mama in April 1997 and, finally, Spice Up Your Life in October 1997. In total, the girls have spent thirty-eight weeks above the list, more than any other act on this list.
Wyclef Jean scores his first Top 10-entry as a solo artist with Guantanamera. The Haitian rapper has entered the Top 10 before as a member of the highly successful rap formation the Fugees. With the Fugees, Wyclef Jean scored three Top 10-hits. Their biggest hit to date is the Number 1-hit Killing Me Softly, which spent four weeks above the list, received a 2 x Platinum-certification and scored over 120,000 points. The group members now endeavor on solo projects as well, with Wyclef Jean scoring hit after hit with his album “Wyclef Jean Presents the Carnival”. His hits enjoyed particular success in the United States. His newest release Guantanamera becomes a hit on this list as well, peaking at Number 9 this week.
Although Natalie Imbruglia loses her Number 1-position this week, her single Torn still earns a Gold Certification. The last Australian artist to receive a Gold Status was Savage Garden with I Want You earlier this year. Natalie Imbruglia her Torn immediately launched her career and made her one of the most successful artists to emerge in the 90s. Her additional album “Left of the Middle” is a big success as well. As of this week, Torn has collected over 40,000 points.
The Verve celebrates a Platinum Certification for Bitter Sweet Symphony. The Verve is a small English alternative rock band who were already a big hit in their native country. Their hit Bitter Sweet Symphony launched their international career though and topped the charts worldwide. The song uses as a sample of Andrew Loog Oldham’s orchestral cover of the Rolling Stones' song The Last Time. The song is acclaimed by critics worldwide and noted for being one of the 90’s best Britpop-hits. As of this week, Bitter Sweet Symphony has amassed over 65,000 points.
