The Spice Girls match record held by Céline Dion whilst scoring their third Number 1-hit + Fugees receive 2 x Platinum

The Spice Girls make a spectacular entrance at Number 1 with 2 Become 1. They dethrone their own single Say You’ll Be There, which spent six weeks above the list. This is the second time that the girls knock themselves off the top, as Say You’ll Be There dethroned Wannabe halfway this year. 2 Become 1 is the Spice Girls’ third Number 1-hit on this list, matching the record held by Céline Dion for ‘Act with the Most Number 1s’. If they manage to score yet another chart-topper, they would become the sole record-holders. Not many songs manage to debut at Number 1. The last single to do so was Freedom by Robbie Williams in August this year. It is not unsuccessful week for Say You’ll Be There though, as the hit receives a Platinum Certification this week for scoring over 65,000 points.

Boyzone score their sixth Top 10-entry with A Different Beat, taken from their sophomore-album of the same name. The Irish boy band has entered the Top 10 before with numerous hits, such as Words and So Good. Their most successful single to date is Love Me for a Reason, which peaked at Number 5 and was certified Gold. Their newest entry finishes at Number 10 this week.

The Fugees receive a 2 x Platinum Certification for their enormous hit Killing Me Softly with his Song. The single spent four weeks at Number 1 and fifteen weeks in the Top 10. The soulful song has become one of the best-selling singles worldwide of 1996, whilst also being one of the best-scoring singles of 1996 on this list.
