Chart

The Spice Girls write chart-history as they occupy the Number 1 and Number 2-position with a double-sided single

The Spice Girls continue to dominate the list. Their fourth double-sided single debuts at Number 1 and Number 2, which is a first in the entire history of this chart. Nobody has managed to occupy both first and the second place before with debuts. The Spice Girls did hold the Number 1 and Number 2-positions on December 20th 1996, when 2 Become 1 entered at Number 1 and bumped Say You’ll Be There off the top to Number 2. The bouncy, disco song Who Do You Think You Are debuts at Number 1, becoming the girls’ fourth chart-topper. The Spice Girls previously crowned the list with Wannabe, Say You’ll Be There and 2 Become 1. The girls now match Céline Dion’s record for ‘Act with the Most Number 1s’, both with four Number 1s. The girls’ heartfelt Mama takes the second place.

The Fugees score their sixth entry on the list with Rumble in the Jungle. The group scored a massive Number 1-hit with Killing Me Softly with His Song, which went on to spend four weeks above the list. The single was certified 2 x Platinum with over 120,000 points and was the third-best-scoring single of 1996. Other hits of the Fugees include, Fu-Gee-La and Ready Or Not. Their last few singles No Woman, No Cry and Refugees On The Mic weren’t able to make much impact on the list. Their newest entry opens at Number 25.

U2 enters the list with Discotheque. The Irish group is considered somewhat of a legend in the music industry, having scored multiple hits and success-albums. On this list, the group has two entries. Their first single Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me was released in 1995 and peaked at Number 11. U2 their second single Miss Sarajevo is the biggest single for the group to date, having peaked at Number 6. The group’s newest single Discotheque enters at Number 36.
