Vermont-born singer Noah Kahan earns his first Number 1 with the breakout “Stick Season”

After facing off against Dua Lipa and holiday classics, American singer-songwriter Noah Kahan finally breaks away to Number 1 after fourteen weeks with “Stick Season”. It is taken from his third album of the same name, inspired by Sam Fender and Phoebe Bridgers. The album was very well received and helped establish a distinct fanbase. Then last year, its title track went viral on TikTok and became a big hit in the UK. It also reached Number 1 in Ireland. On my personal list, “Stick Season” now becomes his first ever Number 1-hit. It is supported by a great cover by Olivia Rodrigo. He is the first American male singer to top my chart since 2022’s Steve Lacy with “Bad Habit”.

British girl group – easily more a female rock group – The Last Dinner Party enter the Top 10 with their breakout hit “Nothing Matters”. The indie rock group signed with Island Records before releasing their debut single and were awarded the Rising Star Brit Award in December 2023, winning the BBC Sound of 2024 poll. Despite having no real chart hit yet, “Nothing Matters” made waves in the United Kingdom and on numerous Billboard charts. As “Nothing Matters” peaks at #8 this week, they become the first all-female band to reach my Top 10 since Little Mix’s 2021 “Kiss My (Uh Oh)”.

Last year, The Weeknd scored multiple streaming hits with the soundtrack to his HBO series The Idol. His “Popular” became a sleeper hit in multiple countries and steady streaming success. On my personal list, the hip hop-pop song made its debut near the end of the year, finally peaking at #10 this week. The Weeknd earns his sixteenth Top 10-entry, while the featured Playboi Carti earns his very first. The real star of the song, however, is the featured pop icon Madonna. The American mega star earns her fifteenth Top 10-hit at 65-years-old. It is Madonna her first Top 10-appearance since 2008’s understated Top 3-hit “Miles Away”. Mind you, the star would have had many more Top 10-hits and Number 1s if charting hadn’t begun in 1995.

At #16, an absolute pop classic re-enters the chart: “Murder on the Dancefloor” by Sophie Ellis-Bextor. It was recently featured in the film Saltburn starring Barry Keoghan in an already iconic scene. “Murder on the Dancefloor” was a big hit back in 2002, becoming Sophie Ellis-Bextor her first and only Number 1-hit and topping the chart for three consecutive weeks. It endured as a modern classic and is currently certified double-platinum. Further down, Mason & Princess Superstar their UK Top 3-hit “Perfect” also makes its debut following its appearance in Saltburn. It currently stands at #29. Both songs’ re-entries are perfect example of how streaming services have made it possible for old songs to find new success, another example being Kate Bush’s return with “Running Up That Hill”.

Further down, Dutch pop stars Flemming, Zoë Tauran and Ronnie Flex join forces on the new “Alles Op Gevoel” at #24. It is the theme single for the upcoming Vrienden van Amstel LIVE! It is the highest new entry of the week. “B.O.T.A.”-producer Eliza Rose teams up with Calvin Harris on the up-tempo and energetic “Body Moving”, which finally enters the chart at #39.
