TikTok has an undeniable influence on the modern pop landscape. Thanks to its accessibility, smaller unknown artists or underrepresented genres can suddenly grow viral and open new doors worldwide – with Afrobeats perhaps being the strongest example. Aya Nakamura brought the genre to Number 1 in 2018 for the first time. Nigerian singer Rema took the genre to newer heights with “Calm Down” in 2022, becoming the best-selling global hit of 2023 with more than 2 billion streams. The breakthrough of more Afrobeats artists followed, including Tyla, Ayra Starr and King Promise. Last week, finally, WizTheMc took “Show Me Love” up to first place. He is able to maintain the top position, bypassing tough competition from Ravyn Lenae’s “Love Me Not”. British rock star Sam Fender moves up to #3 with “Little Bit Closer” following his set at BBC’s Big Radio 1 Weekend – aiming for would-be sixth Number 1-hit on here.
Speaking of TikTok-artists breaking out into the mainstream– welcome Sombr. Actually Shane Boose, he is a New York-born singer who dropped out of high school to pursue his dreams of becoming a big singer. In March 2025, "Back to Friends" and "Undressed" gained popularity after going viral on the video-sharing app TikTok, resulting in his mainstream breakthrough. He was recently included on the important 21 Under 21-list by Billboard, a list that predicts the biggest up-and-comers. He is also set to embark on his first headlining tour. This week, Sombr his “Undressed” breaks my personal Top 10 at #9. It earns the New York-talent his first ever Top 10-hit on here to date. He joins the ever-growing list of artists who found their footing on TikTok, whose recent attributes include Benson Boone, Doja Cat, Chappell Roan and Tyla.
Colombia’s biggest singer since Shakira, Karol G readies herself to claim the summer with “Latina Foreva” – the highest debut at #25. Born and raised in Medellín, Colombia, Karol G launched her career as a teenager, appearing on the Colombian The X Factor. In the late 2010s, collaborations with Ozuna and J Balvin resulted in her first mainstream hits. Her collaboration “Tusa” with Nicki Minaj in 2020 resulted in a 28× Latin platinum by the RIAA in the United States and her first Top 10-entry on my chart. Her most recent album Mañana Será Bonito spawned the Top 10-song “TQG” with Shakira amidst Shakira’s much-publicized divorce with Gerard Piqué. Last summer, Karol earned her biggest-scoring single to date with “Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido”, which finished at #8 and marked her first solo Top 10-record. With “Latina Foreva”, Karol G hopes to claim another summer success. It marks her eighth Top 40-entry.
Further down, Belgian pop star Metejoor crosses paths with another Dutch singer on “Stuk” at #31. He is one of Belgium’s biggest pop stars, but his only Dutch hits are those in collaboration with Dutch hit singers. He worked with Snelle on “Kijk Ons Nou” and Babet on “1 Op Een Miljoen”. Arguably a bit predictable, it did pay off on “Wat Wil Je Van Mij” with Hannah Mae, which peaked at #1 on my list. On the new “Stuk”, Metejoor tries again with Luna. Actually just Luna van Kampen – she is a singer-songwriter that suddenly found herself stumbling onto the national charts with a Dutch cover version of Billie Eilish her Number 1-hit “Birds of a Feather”. Though it has missed my personal Top 40, it was a popular single that accumulated more than 16 million streams on Spotify. Luna recently earned her first Top 10-hit on my chart with the Antoon-produced “Liefste”. Independent pop darling Eefje de Visser rounds out the new entries with the fresh “Onomkeerbaar” at #35. It is taken from the deluxe edition of her latest studio album Heimwee. The album became another acclaimed success for the star, yet it also spawned two Top 20-singles on my chart – namely the dreamy “Vlammen” and very catchy “Weekenden”.
