Squash 40 - Jan W2 22

SINGLES CHART

If you're new to the Squash then you'll quickly pick up that this is a carousel of musical madness and this week, as is generally the standard, around 25% of the songs are new entries meaning a just as many are seeing the boot after a single week. Ouch. The biggest casualties here being DADARAY's Gals surprisingly nosediving from #6 to OUT and SQ Nugu Snail Mail losing not one but two songs from the W1 chart. Luckily for her, they're replaced with the title track from her sophomore album, Valentine (#26) so it's not a complete heartbreaker.

Receiving opposite fortunes, Karencici and Tilly Birds gain one more song in the SQ40 this week (333, #36 and Can't Keep Up ลู่วิ่ง, #20 respectively) with the former still bopping in the Top 10 with Do Do Do (#4). Among the other newcomers to the dancefloor, we have Finland vixen Evelina's new era kickstarter Kyynelii (#8) a mere year after her SQ chart debut, FKA Twigs drunk-crying in a sexy fashion alongside The Weeknd on Tears in the Club (#9) and a conga line of returnees in the sensual stylings of Raveena (Rush, #25), the pagan melodrama of AURORA (Heathens, #32) and LGBT champion Keiynan Lonsdale (Gods of the Disco, #31).

The top position of the week is also a new entry but not a nugu as Hoang Thuy Linh, the Spearhead of melding traditional Vietnamese culture with BANGERS, wishes us good fortune in this Covid-riddled world with the beyond catchy penny spinner Gieo Que. HTL had a particularly success breakout year in 2019 with her self-titled album and has seemingly skirted back to what she does best after a 2 year absence. Den is also on this (he made a faceless appearance in Vietnamese compatriot Min's huge 2020 puss puss hit Vi Yeu Cu Dam Dau) but we don't give kudos to rent-a-rappers here so suffer.

ALBUM CHART

Whilst the single chart endlessly revolves like a rubix cube in a 90's kid commercial, the album chart stays relatively stable. Karencici's excellently-titled 99% Angel perches atop the #1 mark for second week only challenged by FKA Twigs's new release (supposedly a mixtape but basically her 3rd album) CAPRISONGS (#2). Twigs has a particularly strong album legacy at SQ: even though the album chart didn't exist at that point, LP1 was a prominent album from 2014 and the follow-up 2019's MAGDALENE, reached even greater heights being a 4-week #1 and Album of the Year nominee. Time will tell if CAPRISONGS will mark another leap higher for the English auteur.
