Waffle's Current Favourites - Week of May 15, 2021

Now this is probably the most jam-packed week we've had in a looong time. This is partly thanks to dodie, as she just put out her debut album Build A Problem, and it's truly beautiful, but in a way where it's not really the kind of thing I can just put on whenever, I have to be in the right mood to be able to handle it, and therefore it didn't have nearly as much of an impact as albums like Future Nostalgia or Heaven & Hell did last year...but unlike those album bombs, this one actually did impact the very top, because we have a new #1: "When" - an absolutely beautiful song that connects with me on a whole different level. There's a chance it could be #1 for a while, we'll see. "Hate Myself" holds at #2, as well as "deja vu" holding at #3. Then we have last week's #1, "Save Your Tears (Remix)" by The Weeknd and Ariana Grande at #4, and finally we have "Kiss Me More" by Doja Cat and SZA at #5. This is the most new arrivals we've had in one week since August 2019, and the 2nd most of all time. Aside from her new #1, we also have "Special Girl" at #17, "Four Tequilas Down" at #18, and "I Kissed Someone (It Wasn't You)" at #24 all from dodie - I don't know how long these ones will last in the long run but for now they're here. And that's not it because we also have Olivia Rodrigo's newest single "good 4 u" getting a quick debut at #15, "I DID IT" by DJ Khaled and crew at #21, and Lil Nas X making his first chart entry since "Panini (DaBaby Remix)" over a year ago with "MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)" at the very bottom. And this takes us to the dropouts, because we have some BIG ones this week: "Sweet Melody" had a pretty good run and was on its way out anyway, and "Suddenly Strangers" is currently in the Top 10 on my overall leaderboard and was also on the verge of leaving soon anyway, but the minor album bomb plus the rest of the new arrivals was enough to force out "My Head & My Heart" just 3 weeks after it fell out of the Top 10. Woah. It's still the 2nd biggest song of the year as of this week, and hell it even (barely) made my Top 50 for last year as well, but this is the first week since December 2019 where there are no Ava Max songs on the chart at all. She better drop something soon because the chart just doesn't feel complete without her presence. But that's not even the biggest loss of the week, because after over a whole year since its debut, "Love Again" by Dua Lipa has finally exited the chart, after spending 11 weeks at #1, 30 weeks in the Top 5, and 58 weeks on the chart - all of which are the most for any song and it'll probably stay that way for a long, long time. So long, old friend...
