In this week's edition of the chart, we're going back in time to the year 1989 (Taylor's Version). It's almost not fair, because I had a lot of old favourites from this album, and now they finally get a chance to chart, but because I'm already mostly familiar with a lot of the 1989 tracks, I didn't need an extra week to let them sink in - the deep cuts I wasn't as familiar with, as well as the vault tracks will arrive next week. But that's also not the only story of this week, because we also have a brand new #1: "get him back!" by Olivia Rodrigo, snagging the top spot before Taylor inevitably takes over, and pushing "ballad of a homeschooled girl" down to #2 for the first time in its chart run. But then...we get to Taylor: her versions of "New Romantics" and "Out Of The Woods" debut at #3 and #4 respectively - 2 of my very favourites from back in the day, and the new versions do not disappoint. Finally, we've got "bad idea right?" by Olivia Rodrigo down to #5.
This takes us to 3 of my other old favourites from 1989 making their way onto the chart with the re-recorded versions: "Blank Space" at #7, "Welcome To New York" at #9, and "Wildest Dreams" at #12 - the latter of which finally debuting after first showing up in Bubbling Under over 2 years ago (holy shit). And just so you're warned, there will be a lot more next week. Taylor also knocked out quite a few pretty notable songs this week, including some former #1s like "Shy Boy" by Carly Rae Jepsen, "Hits Different" by...herself, and most notably of all, "Surrender My Heart" by Carly Rae Jepsen - which first debuted exactly 1 year ago on the week Carly and Taylor had a dual album bomb, spent 6 total weeks at #1, 30 weeks in the Top 10, and 52 weeks on the chart overall. It is currently sitting at #4 on my all-time leaderboard, and it'll be the only song to make the Top 10 on my year-end leaderboard 2 years in a row. An incredible run for an incredible song.
