My Top 40 - 05/28/2017

Paramore earns first #1 hit with "Hard Times", blocking Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj.

Paramore's "Hard Times" reaches #1 on it's fifth week on the chart. The song is the lead single from After Laughter, their critically acclaimed studio album released this month. Their previous, self-titled album predates this chart, so technically, "Hard Times" is the band's first #1 hit.

In the process, it blocks Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj from a #1 debut with "Swish Swish". The track, from Perry's upcoming studio album Witness, easily outranks "Bon Appétit", which drops out of the top 30 this week. Should it get to #1, it would join "Chained to the Rhythm", which spent three weeks there and stays inside top 20 this week. More on Nicki Minaj below...

Ed Sheeran has cause for celebration this week, because while "Galway Girl" drops one to #3, previous single "Castle on the Hill" earns this week's Greatest Gainer honors with a 16-spot jump to #8. It has reached as high as #3. Lead ÷ single, "Shape of You" drops to #30 on it's 21st week.

Clean Bandit and Zara Larsson vacate the top spot this week after four non-consecutive weeks there (a 2017 best), down to #4 on it's 11th week. The Chainsmokers' "Bloodstream" also drops out of the top 3, to #5.

Imagine Dragons drop to #6 with "Believer", but fellow Evolve track "Whatever It Takes" debuts at #22. Jason Derulo, Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign follow at #7, with "Swalla", a new peak for the song. Nicki Minaj subsequently earns two top 10 entries this week. She reached #1 last year with Ariana Grande on "Side to Side".

Calvin Harris, Frank Ocean and Migos return to the top 10 this week with "Slide" at #9. It has gone as high as #5. The top 10 ends with former #1, "It Ain't Me", by Kygo and Selena Gomez. Kygo and Ellie Goulding's "First Time" drops out, after a single week. Selena's "Only You" also drops this week from the chart, but her new single "Bad Liar" starts at #19. Her last album, Revival, spaned three top five hits.

Below top 10, "Heavy" by Kiiara and Linkin Park jumps inside top 20 for the first time, reaching #12. Kiiara reached #5 last year with "Gold". Calum Scott's cover of "Dancing On My Own" starts at #23. The original Robyn song predates this chart, but it's point totals suggest it would have been an easy top 5 hit.

Greatest Gainer:

Ed Sheeran - "Castle on the Hill" (up 24-8 this week)

Dropping this week:

Selena Gomez - "Only You" (#18 peak, 3 weeks on the chart)
Kygo, Ellie Goulding - "First Time" (#27 peak, 1 week on the chart)
