Quelle surprise, “The Middle” stays at #1, extending the record to six weeks. This is thanks in large part to Emm!e and Emily, who both had this on repeat throughout the week. There are some threats to “The Middle” on the rise however, as “All the Stars” soars 21 spots to #2 and the triumvirate of “Tongue,” “Getting Over You,” and “FRIENDS” continuing their upward ascension at #3, 4 and 5, respectively.
Daina continues to dominate the chart in a major way using what I call the “Broken Record” strategy. This is when you make a short playlist and keep it on repeat throughout the day. While you’re only listening to a select amount of songs, those lucky few will get a healthy boost on the chart. We see “Window” by Magic Giant and “I Keep Ticking On” hit the top ten for the first time as well as “Bad Habits” jumping back into the top ten after a week out. Overall, Daina is responsible for 11 chart entries this week. Congrats to her!
Celina’s chart week did not go as well, getting zero entries. She did attempt to bring back The Greatest Showman, so we’ll see what she can do next week. Emm!e becomes the first one to see Black Panther, hence the major jump for “All the Stars” by Kendrick Lamar & SZA. ScHoolboy Q also gets his first debut at #15 with “X” from the soundtrack. This continues the good luck streak that soundtracks have had for the past few months. Emm!e also seems to have gone to the gym this past week because “HUMBLE.” re-enters at #28, her ultimate workout song.
Emily continues to support the Braintree Top 40 Spotify playlist (thanks, Emily!), giving a boost to many of the songs this week. She also helped Years & Years get their first debut with “Sanctify” at #29, but did she actually like the song? Emily loved their first album, Communion, but it remains to be seen if she’ll be stanning the second. According to Breagh, she had a very “emo week” as she spun The Smiths all night on Thursday. Her lone entry on the chart is “Always Alright” by Alabama Shakes however, which sounds to me like she had a pretty okay week overall.
Could summer be starting already? Two debuts this week have “summer smash” written all over them: “Ride or Die by The Knocks featuring Foster the People and “Inhale” by Duke Dumont featuring Ebenezer at #30 and 33, respectively. While snow still covers the ground here in Braintree, it’s never too early to turn up the heat on the chart.
Next week, look for a BIG debut from Kygo & Miguel as their new song, “Remind Me to Forget” was released to critical acclaim by Josh. We also see releases from Charlie Puth & Kehlani, Lil Dicky & Chris Brown, Rhys, The Chainsmokers, Hayley Kiyoko, Fickle Friends and more, which you can find on The PoP Explo$ion Spotify playlist! We also see yet another soundtrack get released as the Love, Simon soundtrack featuring Troye Sivan, Khalid & Normani, and Jack Antonoff looks to continue the streak. Will anything ever be able to top Zedd or will we be in “The Middle” for the foreseeable future? Find out next week!
