After 6 weeks at #1, “The Middle” has been dethroned for a third time as Kygo and Miguel debut atop the Braintree Top 40 with “Remind Me to Forget”. This is the debut appearance for both artists on the Top 40 as their previous hits pre-date the chart. Janelle Monáe hits the top ten for the first time with “Make Me Feel,” which gains traction thanks to Daina and her Wonderful podcast. Foster the People return to the top ten for the second time as their feature on the new Knocks single jumps up to #10.
We see two big debuts just outside the top ten with Charlie Puth and Shawn Mendes entering at #12 and 13 with their respective singles. What’s most impressive is that Shawn Mendes’s has only been out since midnight! Puth has assisted by Emily while Mendes was supported by his #1 Braintree fan, Celina. The only other debut in the top half of the chart comes from Troye Sivan, who gets his third top 40 hit with “Strawberries & Cigarettes” off the new Love, Simon soundtrack.
Speaking of Love, Simon, the film continues the soundtrack hot streak as Josh saw it this weekend. “Love Lies” remains the top song from the film, jumping to a new peak of #5. Many of the soundtrack’s songs just missed the top 40, so watch out for them to potentially make an appearance next week as word catches on that this movie is goOOod! After Love, Simon though, what will be the next big soundtrack? There doesn’t seem to be a big one coming out in the near future so we’ll see how long this streak of consecutive soundtrack singles appearing on the chart can continue.
Everyone had a quiet week as they seemed more concerned with snowstorms and dick warts than listening to music. Emm!e went to the gym at least once this week as “HUMBLE.” comes in at #27 while both her and Emily keep MATOMA’s “Old Thing Back” afloat at #28. Daina continued her broken record strategy as she managed to score three chart entries this week. Celina listened to Lucy Schwartz (whoever that is) on repeat all week, but not enough to get her a coveted space on the top 40. Emily looks to have had the most influence on the chart as she not only supported the Braintree Top 40 Spotify playlist but also got 5 Seconds of Summer on the chart for the first time at #22 with “Want You Back”. Breagh was feeling like a motherfuckin’ woman this week as she spun Rainbow this week. Unfortunately, all her Kesha singles JUST missed the chart (literally, they came in at #43-46) this week). Maybe our glitter queen will re-enter next week?
Two curious debuts come from Josh's new favorite tv show, Please Like Me. This Australian comedy highlighted Guy Sebastian's 2009 Aussie #1 "Like It LIke That" and Steps' 1998 #1 "5,6,7,8" in their first season. If you haven't watched this show or listened to these super fun songs, do so now! You will not be disappointed.
As we look ahead to next week, we see releases from Panic! At the Disco, David Guetta & Sia, Kacey Musgraves and Thirty Seconds to Mars as well as another surprise release from Shawn Mendes entitled “Lost in Japan”. We also see a new EP from Diplo featuring Desiigner, MØ, Lil Yachty, D.R.A.M. and more drop as well. While not coming out this week, we did get a MAJOR announcement that Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa are releasing a “hi-NRG” dance song akin to “We Found Love” sometime soon, entitled “One Kiss”. I literally can’t even and I bet you can’t either. Will “The Middle” rise back to the top or has the fever finally broke? Find out next week!
