Swift's "reputation" conquers, "Wolves" manages to hang on at #2.
We were all expecting "reputation" to be big but I'm unsure whether we were expecting all 15 songs to feature in the top 20 at once?! If that doesn't show the strength of the album, I don't know what will. With 11 brand new Taylor Swift songs debuting on the chart this week, Swift has now made 18 chart appearances this year, second to just Miss Gomez (22). Taylor Swift gets her second #1 with "This is Why We Can't Have Nice Things" - the rumoured Kayne West shade track has become an instant hit. "reputation"'s other biggest offerings include "Delicate" at #3, "End Game" at #4 and "Don't Blame Me" at #5. "End Game" is Ed Sheeran's 10th chart appearance and 7th top 10 hit and Future's 4th appeatance and 4th top 10 hit.
Even though Taylor dominated, long-time BFF Selea Gomez somehow managed to fall just one place to #2 with her Marshmello collab "Wolves"; Mid-week it was looking like the song was going to take dive towards the bottom of the top 10 but a burst towards the end of the week kept it at a respectalbe number. This is the song's 4th week on the chart and with a music video and live performance all happening throughout the week, a climb back to the top wouldn't be too surprising. Gomez's second song on the chart "Bad Liar" falls 10 spots, joint for the biggest faller status this week. However, a big fall this week is less shocking when Taylor Swift has just released a whole album. This is the 27th week for "Bad Liar", it's slowly creeping up on "It Ain't Me" to become the biggest song of the year. Gomez continues her 45-week streak, not leaving the chart once.
Back to Taylor Swift now. "I Did Something Bad" is at #6, "New Year's Day" at #9, "Dress" at #10, "So It Goes..." at #11, "Dancing With Our Hands Tied" at #12, "Getaway Car" at #13 and "King of my Heart" is at #14. Swift sets a chart record for the most chart appearances in a single week- 15/20 songs belonging to her. The only artist I could see breaking that record is Gomez with her next album. It will be interesting to see which songs from "reputation" break out from the others and stand the test of time. It will also be interesting to see whether any of the songs will outpeak themselves if they are chosen as an official single later down the line. Swift has done the unimaginable with "reputation", truly a legendary artist.
In terms of Swift's existing songs and how they moved. "Look What You Made Me Do" benefited from the album release, climbing 3 places to #7. This is the song's 12th week on the chart and it doesn't look like it's going anywhere anytime soon. "Gorgeous" drops 5 places to #8. 4 weeks on the chart and all 4 in the top 10; that's pretty impressive for a buzz album track and once again, the steeper fall is understandable. "Call It What You Want" did not demonstrate much staying power as it couldn't compete with the rest of the album- the song fell 7 places this week to #15 in just its second week on the chart. Finally, "...Ready For It?" returned at #16. The song has now spent 9 non-continuous weeks on the chart and is close to being certified as a hit.
Other than Swift and Gomez, 4 artists attempted to compete with "reputation". Rita Ora's "Anywhere" is joint biggest falling, sliding 10 spaces to #17 in its second week. The song started off strong last week but is now close to melting away as the competition gets fiercer. Clean Bandit and Julia Michaels return back to the chart with "I Miss You"- after being part of their EMA setlist, the song has received a slight boost. It still hasn't cracked the top 10 though and is currently sitting at #18. Finally, a surprise new entry from Dua Lipa closes this week's chart- "Dreams" got a last minute boost on Thursday and entered the chart. This is Dua Lipa's 7th chart appearance and 15th week. It's recently been announced that "IDGAF" will be Dua's next song to get the single treatment so it is possible that song could return and pass its current peak of #10.
