Boosted by incredible streaming numbers, Belgian singer Metejoor and Dutch newcomer Hannah Mae fly to Number 1 with their duet “Wat Wil Je Van Mij”. The song was originally released in January this year, after which it stalled at #40 on my personal list. It, however, turns out to be a sleeper hit, suddenly receiving a massive increase on Spotify. Metejoor is already an established success in Flemish Belgium, where he has scored two Number 1s, while newcomer Hannah Mae is probably best known for her song “Back To You” which was used in a supermarket commercial in the Netherlands. The last time we saw a Belgian-Dutch combination at Number 1 was in 2020 when the Dutch Jaap Reesema and the Belgian Pommelien Thijs secured the Christmas Number 1. Overall, Metejoor is the fifth Belgian artist to score a Number 1-hit on my personal list. “Wat Wil Je Van Mij” dethrones Calvin Harris & Ellie Goulding, who spent two weeks leading the list with “Miracle”.
Maan & Goldband enter a fifteenth week inside the Top 3 with their multi-platinum “Stiekem”, which shows no sign of slowing down any time soon. Ayra Starr reaches a new peak at #5 with “Rush”, while both Shakira and Miley Cyrus their respective chart-toppers rebound inside the Top 10. Further down, Cyrus her follow-up “River” is set to break the Top 10, stalling at #11 this week. Mimi Webb moves up to #14 with “Freezing”, while “Roles Reversed” bounces back into the Top 20. Karol G & Shakira also remain stable with “TQG” at #15, while Rosalía and Rauw Alejandro their duet “Beso” soars to brand new heights at #17.
Dutch indie talent Merol takes the highest debut of the week with “Het Feest Is Al Voorbij”, entering at #19. Ever since she went viral in 2018 with the catchy 1980s-inspired “Lekker Met de Meiden”, she has been releasing critically acclaimed tracks about modern feminism, dating and being young. She enjoyed chart success in Belgium and on my personal list with “Vol”, which peaked at #14. She also had a very successful festival summer last year, playing some of the Netherlands’ and Belgium’s biggest stages. She now returns with “Het Feest Is Al Voorbij”, immediately recognizable by its synths. It is taken from Merol her new EP Alles Smaakt Beter Met Prik. With its top debut, Merol bags her fourth Top 40-entry on my personal chart.
Further down, London-based DJ Fred Again.. enters #29 with “Turn On the Lights again..”. The hit is a straight up banger with a strong hook and incredible build-up. Fred Again.. produced it alongside Swedish House Mafia, best known for his Top 10-hit “One (Your Name)”. Earlier this year, Fred Again.. enjoyed chart success with “Strong” featuring and the platinum-certified “Pull Me Out of This”. His EP Actual Life received critical acclaim and was nominated for a Brit Award. This week, Fred appeared on NPR Music Tiny Desk, which was well received by critics and fans alike, praising his musical flexibility and ability to incorporate electronic sounds into an acoustic setting.
Australian pop icon Kylie Minogue debuts at #34 with “10 Out of 10”, her new collaboration with Dutch DJ Oliver Heldens. It marks Heldens his first chart appearance since 2015’s hit single “Gecko” featuring Becky Hill, while it marks Minogue her first post-Disco release. Dutch duo Acda en de Munnik return at #39 with their comeback song “Morgen Wordt Fantastisch”. They are Dutch pop royalty – their #2-hit “Het Regent Zonnestralen” is a crowd favourite, while they enjoyed Number 1-success in 2001 with “Zij Maakt Het Verschil” alongside Van Dik Hout. Their comeback has been long overdue.
