While she remains at Number 1 for a sixth week with “Espresso” – albeit with some big competition – Sabrina Carpenter bags a Top 10-debut as well. First things first: “Espresso” keeps being supported by big streaming figures and playlisting. Alongside Joost his disqualified Eurovision-entry “Europapa", the caffeinated hit ranks as the longest-running Number 1 of 2024 so far. The follow-up “Please Please Please” already lines up as her next big hit, as it lands at #7 this week. It is supported by a fun music video featuring her boyfriend Barry Keoghan. Not exactly like its predecessor, “Please Please Please” is another fun effort that highlights Sabrina her bubbly personality. It is not, however, the highest new entry of the week.
That honour belongs to the Dutch cross-over hit single “Huisfeestje” between de Bankzitters and Roxy Dekker. First some history. De Bankzitters are a group of young Dutch YouTubers with many viral videos that have released some pop songs as well, such as the Top 40-hit “Je Blik Richting Mij”. Then the past few months, tabloids speculated that Bankzitter van Heest is in a relationship with “Satisfyer”-singer Roxy Dekker. She has become a runaway hit since her debut last year. She last debuted atop my chart with “Sugardaddy”, which hasn’t left the Top 3 since its release. Confirming the rumours, De Bankzitters and Roxy Dekker now come together on “Huisfeestje”. Only barely missing out on the top position, the single debuts at #2.
The boys of gold do it again, as the second single from their upcoming sophomore album moves into the Top 10. Goldband their “Sex” reaches a new peak at #6 this week. It is a light-hearted song about, obviously, intercourse, featuring a thumping beat. Between their debut on my chart in 2019 and their recent Top 5-hit “You & Me”, Goldband has become one of the most successful Dutch acts of all time. “Noodgeval” became a multi-platinum Number 1 following a career-defining set at Lowlands in 2022 and the collaboration with Maan “Stiekem” ranks as the highest-scoring Dutch song of all time, having earned diamond status. The feel-good “Sex” is now their eighth Top 10-hit to date. With their second album coming soon, even higher peaks could be reached.
Speaking of album drops boosting chart performances: “360” by Charli XCX breaks the Top 10 at #10 following the release of Brat. It is her sixth studio album and was met with universal acclaim, ranking as the highest-rated album of 2024 on MetaCritic. It has also went viral across the internet due to the album art its simplistic yet effective design. Charli XCX earns her seventh Top 10-entry on my list to date. Despite her longevity as an artist – mind you, she debuted in 2012 with “I Love It” – she doesn’t have that many Top 10s. 2022’s “Beg for You” even was a comeback of sorts, and her first Top 10-hit since the Number 1 “Fancy” from 2014. Ever since Crash, she is consistently charting inside my Top 20, including a very big “Speed Drive” for the Barbie film.
Best Kept Secret Festival was held last weekend and many of its artists impact my chart this week. At #13 is headliner Justice their Top 40-debut with “Neverender”. Its set was acclaimed as one of the best of the weekend. It features Tame Impala who earns his fifth Top 40-hit to date. MEROL debuts further down at #26 with the cutting “LETSGOOOO”, taken from her upcoming sophomore album. The great British band Jockstrap make their debut with “Greatest Hits” following their amazing set in the Two. It is taken from their album I Love You Jennifer B, gained critical acclaim and was nominated for the 2023 Mercury Prize.
Amidst the chaos, some other non-Best Kept-songs make their entrance. Ariana Grande has released the third single from her Eternal Sunshine-album with “The Boy Is Mine”, a reference to the Brandy & Monica-hit from 1998. With a cool music video to boot, it debuts at #27, the first single off the album to miss a Top 10-debut. Joost follows up his controversial Eurovision-Number 1 “Europapa” with the 1990s happy hardcore-inspired “Luchtballon” at #35. It would have debuted higher if it wasn’t for all the other songs debuting this week. Finally, at #39, Dutch pop singer Maan enters with “Rondje van de Zaak”. It is the follow-up to her single “Paranoia”, which despite its debut at #7, completely flopped and fell off the chart after only three weeks. Mind you, her previous hits charted for more than fifteen weeks easily and rank as one of the biggest Dutch hits of all time.
