Dua Lipa earns record-breaking eleventh Number 1-hit + big debuts for Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus

The Barbie soundtrack continues to dominate my personal list, although this week around, a new Barbie moves to the pole position. After already fourteen impressive weeks inside the Top 10, Dua Lipa moves to Number 1 with the album its lead single “Dance The Night”. The single originally debuted at #6 and has refused to drop lower ever since. It was briefly blocked by Barbie-colleague Billie Eilish her “What Was I Made For?”, which spent three weeks atop the list. As “Dance The Night” finally dances away to Number 1, Dua Lipa collects her eleventh record-breaking chart-topper. She is now officially the female solo artist with the most Number 1s of all time, passing Britney Spears and Shakira. She is also the act with the second-most Number 1s of all time, only bested by the Spice Girls who have earned twelve in their heyday. Her biggest Number 1s to date are “Levitating”, “One Kiss” with Calvin Harris and “New Rules”, which currently stands as one of the best-scoring single of all time. For a full overview of Dua Lipa’s impressive records on my personal charts, see the lists below this week’s chart.

Meanwhile Selena Gomez makes her long overdue solo comeback with “Single Soon”. Earlier this year, she had a Top 10-hit as a feature on Rema’s remix of “Calm Down”. Her last solo smash, however, was 2019’s “Lose You To Love Me” which topped the Billboard Hot 100. She now returns with the upbeat “Single Soon”, a stand-alone release that is unapologetically pop. The song debuts at #6 on my personal chart this week, earning the Disney-graduate her seventeenth Top 10-entry. It’s not the first time one of her stand-alone releases achieves chart success – “Bad Liar” went Top 20 while “Fetish” shot to Number 1 in one week.

Miley Cyrus also makes a Top 10-debut with her new release “Used To Be Young” at #9. This single is an emotional retrospective; looking back on Cyrus her diverse career that saw her starting out as a young actress on Disney before becoming a – sometimes controversial – worldwide hit machine. It is the fourth official single from Cyrus her eighth studio album Endless Summer Vacation, which received a reissue. It previously spawned the Number 1-hit “Flowers”, which spent five weeks atop the list and triumphed all her previous songs. With “Used To Be Young” her debut at #9, Cyrus quietly collects her nineteenth Top 10-entry on my personal list.

2023 continues to be the year of the sleeper hit. We saw The Weeknd & Ariana Grande achieve Top 10-success with a 2017 deep cut, while Ayra Starr and Rema both had delayed success with their respective afrobeats hits. Taylor Swift now joins the growing list of sleeper hit singles, as “Cruel Summer’ rises to a new peak at #10 this week. It was originally included on 2019’s album Lover, after which it became a fan favorite. Following exposure on TikTok and Swift’s massive The Eras Tour, “Cruel Summer” had resurged. With its new peak at #10, America’s pop darling collects her twelfth Top 10-entry on my chart. It marks her first Top 10-peak since her multi-platinum Number 1 “Anti-Hero” last year.

Further down, four other songs make their (re-)entry. SZA debuts at #21 with “Snooze”, the sixth single from her second studio album SOS. It previously spawned the Top 3-hits “Good Days” and “Kill Bill”. Rita Ora and Joel Corry have joined forces with MK on “Drinking” at #30. The upbeat summer anthem samples Chance the Rapper his 2016 classic “All Night”. American country stars Zach Bryan and Kacey Musgraves debut at #37 with their duet “I Remember Everything”, which has become a streaming giant in the United States upon release. It marks both artists their first chart entry. Finally, Belgian pop starlet Pommelien Thijs re-enters at #40 with “Erop of Eronder”. The single is boosted again by Pommelien’s acclaimed performance on the Dutch-Belgian hit drama series Knokke Off. The single previously stalled at #36 a few weeks ago.
