Get outta her way! – Kylie soars to Number 1 with “Padam, Padam”, earning a rare chart record

Get outta her way everybody, Kylie Minogue charges to Number 1 with her infectious “Padam, Padam”. It is the first release from her upcoming sixteenth studio album Tension, set to be released later this year. Supported by monstrous streaming figures, “Padam, Padam” sees Kylie earning her first Number 1-hit in over a decade – she last topped the charts in 2011 with “Higher” featuring Taio Cruz. Kylie now adds an eighth Number 1-hit to her catalogue. Additionally, Kylie becomes the third artist in chart history to earn a Number 1-hit in three consecutive decades: “Spinning Around” in the 2000s amongst others, “All the Lovers” in the 2010s amongst others, and now “Padam, Padam” in the 2020s. The record was first accomplished by Beyoncé last year when “Break My Soul” went to Number 1 and again by Shakira this year when "BZRP Music Sessions #53" went to Number 1. “Padam, Padam” also shows no sign of slowing down, outperforming its closest competitor three-to-one.

With temperatures rising, Bad Bunny goes up – earning his new “Where She Goes” a peak at #10. The Spanglish Jersey club track is a definite summer hit in the making, already racking up millions of streams across the globe. Despite being a chart phenomenon with over 70 Top 100-entries on the Billboard Hot 100, Bad Bunny has not scored that many big hits on my chart yet. In 2018, the Puerto Rican rapper hit Number 1 with Cardi B on “I Like It”, and in 2020 he collaborated with Dua Lipa on the Top 3-smash “Un Dia (One Day)”. The new “Where She Goes” now finally becomes his first Top 10-entry as a solo artist to date.

Furthermore inside the Top 10, British pop darling Harry Styles re-peaks at #4 with his “Satellite”. It is boosted by his three sold-out arena shows in Amsterdam this week. Libianca and Cian Ducrot continue to climb with “People” at #5, while Dua Lipa comfortably remains at #6 with her Barbie-song “Dance the Night”. Inside the Top 20, Dutch hip hop formation De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig peak at #12 with the electric “Ze Is Pas Net Begonnen”, closely followed by Zoë Tauran at #13 with “Outside”. Influencer and singer Roxy Dekker soars up to #15 with the summer-infused “Anne-Fleur Vakantie”, while Miley Cyrus peaks at #18 with “Jaded”, followed by Turfy Gang their “Padellen” rounds out the Top 20.

One of the more bizarre chart entries of the year so far is “Schultenbräu” by Donnie & Chantal Janzen – which becomes the highest debut of the week at #16. The single is an unmistakable Après-ski party anthem best reserved for the winter or Dutch carnival. It is the official “Foute Anthem of 2023” (Most Camp Anthem of 2023) selected by Dutch radio stations, which explains the song’s humorous lyrical content about a popular cheap beer (the German Schultenbräu). The man behind the song – Donnie – is no stranger to party hits. His previous songs “Bon Gepakt” and “Frans Duits” were both very popular in The Netherlands due to their comedic lyrics. Donnie is joined by Chantal Janzen, who is an extremely popular showbiz figure in the Netherlands. She is best known to international audiences for presenting Eurovision 2021 in Rotterdam.

Following multiple Top 10-hits, Kris Kross Amsterdam aim for another big smash, this time with Tinie Tempah and Sofía Reyes on “How You Samba”, debuting at #22. The song samples Bellini their 1998-hit “Samba de Janeiro”, which peaked at #15 on my personal list back in the 90s. Dutch rappers Antoon and Ronnie Flex debut at #30 with their highly anticipated collaboration “Sliden”. Dutch hip hop team De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig earn their second entry on this week’s chart at #31 with “Goed Nieuws”, which they promoted with a music video featuring Goldband.

A special spotlight is reserved for “Unhealthy” by Anne-Marie, which debuts at #39 this week. It serves as the fourth single from Anne-Marie her upcoming third studio album of the same name. The country-infused song features pop royalty Shania Twain – the 90s undisputed queen of country-pop – who finally makes her long overdue return to the charts. Between 1998 and 1999, Shania Twain racked up three big Number 1s and conquered the globe with her multi-platinum Come On Over. She is credited as country’s first big cross-over star, paving the path for acts such as Taylor Swift years later. Alongside Anne-Marie, “Unhealthy” sees Twain earning her twelfth Top 40-hit to date – and her first in over nineteen years. For a full overview of Shania Twain her biggest hits to date, see the ranking below.
