Kylie Minogue and Peggy Gou go head-to-head for Number 1

In 2022, Peggy Gou remixed Kylie Minogue her 2001-Number 1 smash hit “Can’t Get You Out of My Head”. Although the song was primarily used to promote Magnum Ice Cream, it became a house classic and streaming success. Now, over a year later, Peggy Gou and Kylie Minogue are up against each other in a head-to-head race for this week’s Number 1. “(It Goes Like) Nanana” claims the top position again, earning Peggy Gou a third non-consecutive week leading the list. Minogue finishes in second place with her queer anthem “Padam, Padam” – the single has not left the Top 3 since its release. Gou and Minogue are only separated by less than seven combined streams; a nail-biting close finish.

A few weeks ago, Fred Again.. headlined the Dutch festival Down the Rabbit Hole. His set on Friday received critical acclaim and was the festival’s most-attended performer. Still riding its wave of success, Fred Again.. earns two new Top 10-entries this week – “Danielle (Smile On My Face)” at #7 and “Turn On The Lights Again” at #9. The former of the two songs features rapper 070 Shake, who also performed at DTRH and scored a big Number 1-hit this year with “Escapism” with Raye. The latter of the two has been charting for multiple weeks now, having previously peaked at #11. With no sign of slowing down, Fred Again.. collects his third and fourth Top 10-hits at once.

It would be no surprise if you have forgotten that Troye Sivan used to be a YouTuber in a distant past. Ever since the release of 2015’s debut Blue Neighbourhood, the Australian singer has managed to build a dedicated fanbase and score some memorable hits – 2017’s “There For You” with Martin Garrix and 2018’s nostalgia jam “1999” with Charli XCX. He now returns with the thrilling “Rush”, a very queer and very sexual dance single. It precedes his upcoming third album Something to Give Each Other, set to be released later this year. With a lot of hype surrounding the music video, Troye Sivan easily secures the top debut of the week. He enters at #15 on my personal list this week, his highest opening week to date. It is also his first solo entry in over five years, his last being 2018’s “My, My, My!”.

A few places down, Billie Eilish makes her return with “What Was I Made For?” at #24. It was released as the fourth single from the official Barbie soundtrack. It has been some time since Billie scored a major hit on my personal list, with her last Top 10-entry dating back to “No Time to Die”. With Mark Ronson on production, Billie could be looking at a revival. Dutch singer-songwriter Flemming debuts at #39 with “Hypnose”. He also announced a new headlining show in the AFAS Live in Amsterdam, which is set to be his biggest show to date.

To celebrate the release of the new Barbie film and its impressive soundtrack, I have decided to rank the most successful singles from official soundtracks to date. Céline Dion takes the top spot with her 1998-power ballad “My Heart Will Go On” from the blockbuster Titanic. It spent nine consecutive weeks at Number 1, went multi-platinum and was the biggest song of that year. Ellie Goulding takes second place with her smash hit “Love Me Like You Do” for Fifty Shades of Grey. Her single “Still Falling For You” for Bridget Jones’s Baby places eighteenth in the overall ranking. Speaking of Bridget Jones, Geri Halliwell’s hit cover of “It’s Raining Men” for the original 2001-film ranks third. Other honourable mentions on this ranking include the James Bond title songs – Adele’s “Skyfall [#5], Tina Turner’s “GoldenEye” [#7] and Garbage’s “The World is Not Enough” [#15], Madonna’s “Die Another Day” [#23], Sheryl Crow’s “Tomorrow Never Dies” [#24], Chris Cornell’s “You Know My Name” [#32] and Billie Eilish’s “No Time to Die” [#39].
