With an uplift in streaming figures, Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars prove classic music always prevails – their duet “Die with a Smile” soars up to Number 1 this week. Both singers rose to big fame in the late 2000s, scoring some of the biggest multi-platinum hits of the 2010s. Together, they have scored eight Number 1s and twenty-eight Top 10-hits. Though both iconic stars, it’s been some time since we have seen them on the charts. Gaga her last appearance was the letdown 2022-ballad “Hold My Hand” – barely scratched #40 – while Mars was last spotted in the Top 10 with Anderson .Paak as Silk Sonic in 2021. They now return together on “Die With a Smile”, a refreshingly long adult contemporary single. It marks Lady Gaga her sixth Number 1-hit and Bruno Mars his fourth. Mars scored his last Number 1 back in 2018 with Cardi B on “Finesse (Remix)”, already six years ago, while Lady Gaga has waited even longer, her last Number 1 being 2011’s “Judas”.
Meanwhile, Sabrina Carpenter leaves quite an impression as her newest album Short n' Sweet impacts my chart this week. “Please, Please, Please” rebounds to fourth place, “Espresso” moves back into the Top 15, and an all-new song debuts at #6: “Taste”. It marks Sabrina Carpenter her second consecutive Top 10-debut on my list. The pop song addresses complex relationship issues, possibly referring to the love triangle rumours with Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello. “Taste” has a killer hook, and an even more killer music video, starring scream queen Jenna Ortega (a possible Cabello stand-in) and heavily draws inspiration from cult classics such as Death Becomes Her. With “Taste” its debut at #6, Sabrina Carpenter earns her third Top 10-entry to date.
Further down, Peggy Gou scores her second Top 40-entry to date with “Find The Way” at #30. Her “It Goes Like (Nanana)” dominated last summer, even becoming the best-scoring Number 1 of 2024. The initial follow-ups flopped, but following her set at Lowlands Festival, she cracks the Top 40 again. At #33, Dutch pop singer Maan returns with “Vermomd Entrée” as it precedes her upcoming third studio album Eclips. She has been a chart mainstay since 2016, scoring some of the biggest Dutch hits of all time, but her recent outings have underperformed considerably. With the Froukje-inspired “Vermomd Entrée”, Maan hopes to set the stage for a comeback. Finally, Emma Heesters and Rolf Sanchez cross paths again on the fresh “Contigo” at #38. They previously worked together in 2019 on “Pa Olvidarte” which topped my chart and went multi-platinum; both artists’ their biggest success yet.
As Lady Gaga claims her sixth Number 1, she also claims a rare record – she now has the longest gap between chart-toppers. Her last Number 1 was the controversial “Judas” in 2011, and since then 4865 days have passed, roughly more than thirteen years. No other act has needed more time between their Number 1s. The record was previously held by both Kylie Minogue and Beyoncé – what?! – who both needed 4515 days between 2011’s “Higher” and last year’s “Padam, Padam”, and 2010’s “Telephone” and 2022’s “Break My Soul”, respectively. For a full rundown of this rare chart feat, see the list below this chart. In fourth place, ranks Take That who held the original record for sixteen years with 3913 days between 1996’s “How Deep Is Your Love” and 2006’s comeback “Patience”. Charli XCX takes fifth place with 3731 days between “Fancy” and the new “girl, so confusing” with Lorde. Bruno Mars barely does not appears on the list, ranking eleventh with “Die with a Smile”.
