One of the most successful and acclaimed new artists to debut in the last five years, for me, has to be English singer-songwriter Sam Fender. After scoring a minor Top 40-hit with “Play God” in 2019, the North Shields-born singer soon skyrocketed to the top with “Hypersonic Missiles” and his debut album of the same name. The album became one of my most-streamed albums of all time, while the singles “Will We Talk?”, “Saturday” and “All Is On My Side” all achieved considerable success. This week, “Seventeen Going Under”, the lead single of his second studio album, finally climbs to Number 1, earning Sam Fender his third chart-topper on this list. The song was the most-streamed song of the week, culminating in over twenty-five streams. Success was supported by Fender his amazing sets at festivals across the United Kingdom, especially at Reading and Leeds Festival. The new Number 1-single dethrones “Love Tonight” by electronic duo Shouse, which spent three consecutive weeks atop the chart. The song nearly lost the crown position to Elton John and Dua Lipa their “Cold Heart”, which jumps to second place this week.
Norwegian pop talent Sigrid moves up three places into the Top 10 with her synth-electro song “Burning Bridges”, peaking at Number 9. It marks Sigrid her fifth Top 10-single on this list. Following her breakthrough in 2017 with “Don’t Kill My Vibe”, the singer has been steadily scoring Top 40-hits. Her debut album Sucker Punch spawned the Number 1-single “Strangers”, while “Don’t Feel Like Crying” reached the Top 10. Sigrid her new “Burning Bridges” is the follow-up to the Top 20-single “Mirror”, which claimed some considerable success, although it failed to reach the same heights of Sigrid her previous entries. Its success is aided by some of Sigrid her recent live performances, including her set at Reading and Leeds Festival.
The highest debut of the week is claimed by Lil Nas X with “That’s What I Want”, taken from his newly released studio album Montero. The American rapper his first extended play was my most-streamed new album of the week. It already spawned the Top 10-hit “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” and the slow-burner “Industry Baby”. Some of his previous successes include the massive “Old Town Road”, which peaked at Number 3 and was one of the most successful songs of the 2010s. As his new single “That’s What I Want” enters at Number 29, Lil Nas X earns his sixth Top 40-hit.
While he takes the Number 1-position with “Seventeen Going Under”, Sam Fender his follow-up single “Get You Down” makes its debut at Number 34. Success is aided by some incredible live performances. At Number 38, Dutch singers Emma Heesters and Ronnie Flex enter the list with “Meisje Zonder Naam”; a cover of Peter Andre his 1996 Number 1-hit “Mysterious Girl”. The duo collaborated before on the Top 3-hit “Alles Wat Ik Mis”, which is one of the highest-scoring songs of 2021 so far.
To celebrate the end of the summer, I have decided to take a look at the highest-scoring summer songs of 2021. Amassing over 100,000 points and claiming over 200 streams, “Hyperventilatie” by Dutch newcomer Antoon is the highest-scoring song of summer 2021. The disco synth song logged seven consecutive weeks at Number 1s and spent the entire summer inside the Top 10. Antoon beats “Love Again” by Dua Lipa, which amassed over 65,000 points during the summer period. The single became the British singer her ninth Number 1-hit on this chart after debuting atop the list with the highest opening numbers of the year so far. Number 1-hits “good 4 u” by Olivia Rodrigo, “Stay” by The Kid LAROI with Justin Bieber, and “Seventeen Going Under” by Sam Fender round out the Top 5. As expected, electronic-dance music dominated throughout the summer; some favourites include Mabel’s comeback hit “Let Them Know” (8) and the Number 1-hit “Love Tonight” by Shouse (6).
