The Backstreet Boys set for a fifth week at Number 1; Britney Spears receives 4 x Platinum

The Backstreet Boys earn a fifth week at Number 1 with their massive single I Want It That Way. The single is a big international hit, most notably topping the Billboard Hot 100 and the Official UK Charts.  It has been established as their fastest-selling release, aiding the anticipation of their upcoming album “Millennium”. The Backstreet Boys needed almost five years to score a Number 1-hit, since they began charting on this list with We’ve Got It Goin’ On.

Spanglish music is a huge success this year, following the successes of Los Del Río and Ricky Martin, whom is steadily rocking the Top 3. Enrique Iglesias is newest addition to the Spanish-English trend, stepping into the Top 10 with Bailamos. Enrique Iglesias is the son of Julio Iglesias who is known as the best-selling Spanish artist of all time. Enrique Iglesias is now making name for his own, breaking sales records worldwide. Bailamos is already a big success in most Spanish countries. This week, Enrique Iglesias peaks at Number 7.

Boyzone steps into the Top 10 with You Needed Me. Boyzone has already experienced massive success on this list, scoring a Number 1-hit with No Matter What and amassing twelve Top 10-singles. Boyzone is also an international success, having scored many Number 1-hits in Ireland and the United Kingdom. Boyzone their newest single You Needed Me is a cover of the original by Anne Murray. The single already topped the UK Official Singles Chart, keeping Geri Halliwell off the top spot. On this list, Boyzone peaks at Number 10 this week.

Madonna scores the highest debut of the week. Madonna is a phenomenal icon, having scored countless hits worldwide. Some of her successes include Like a Virgin, Material Girl and Holiday. Madonna had a comeback last year, scoring three Top 10-singles of which the biggest was the sultry Frozen. Madonna now returns with Beautiful Stranger, the promotional single of the new Austin Powers film. Madonna debuts at Number 15 this week, possibly eyeing a fifth Top 10-single.

Geri Halliwell receives a Gold Certification for Look at Me. The already iconic song marked Geri her official departure from the Spice Girls, following her exit on the 31st of May. Geri Halliwell returned in full glamour, debuting at Number 1 with huge opening numbers. Geri Halliwell was the second Spice Girl to score a chart-topper, following When You’re Gone by Melanie C this year. Geri Halliwell promised more singles would follow, which could easily become her second Number 1-single.

Shania Twain receives a Gold Certification for That Don’t Impress Me Much. The single was the third release of her million-selling album “Come On Over” to become a Top 10-hit on this list. The song was preceded by the Number 1-hit You’re Still the One and From This Moment On. Subsequently, That Don’t Impress Me Much became Shania Twain her second chart-topper and spent one week above the list. As of this week, her single has amassed over 40,000 points.

The biggest breakthrough artist of this year must be Britney Spears. The teen-singer debuted worldwide with …Baby One More Time, which went on to become a multi-million success. Most notably, the single topped the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Official Charts. On this list, the hit single spent eight weeks at Number 1. This week, the single receives a 4 x Platinum Certification for having scored over 120,000 points. The single is the best-scoring single of the year so far, outscoring competition from the Spice Girls and Bryan Adams. Britney Spears her …Baby One More Time is now the tenth-best-scoring single of all time.
