The Spice Girls celebrate a sixth consecutive week at Number 1 with Viva Forever. The single is one of the girls’ longest-running singles yet. The song is the girls’ ninth consecutive single to peak above the list, following other successes such as Who Do You Think You Are and Mama. Internationally, the song is phenomenal success as well, hugely aided by the buzz surrounding Geri Halliwell’s departure. The Spice Girls continue to face competition from B*Witched, whom not enter a second consecutive week at Number 2 with C’est La Vie. B*Witched comes closely though and could snatch the Number 1-position next week.
Stardust step into the Top 10 with Music Sounds Better with You. Stardust is a one-time musical effort consisting of producers Thomas Bangalter, Alan Braxe, and singer Benjamin Diamond. Music Sounds Better with You is becoming an international hit, especially in the UK. The song, which is based around a sample from the 1981 song Fate by Chaka Khan, was recorded in Paris by Daft House productions. Daft Punk already scored a huge hit on this list with Around the World, which peaked at Number 3 and amassed over 65,000 points. Stardust prove they can score a hit as well, climbing towards Number 7 this week.
Faithless scores the highest debut of the week. Faithless is a British electronica band consisting of Maxi Jazz, Sister Bliss and Rollo. The group are currently promoting their upcoming second album “Sunday 8PM”, following the success of their debut album “Reverence”. That first album spawned the hit single Insomnia, which was a minor success on this list. The group now returns with God Is a DJ as the lead single of the new album. The song is already a big success in the Netherlands, debuting at Number 18 on this list.
Brandy and Monica receive a 2 x Platinum Certification for their hit single The Boy Is Mine. The single became the girls’ biggest hit on this list in no time, marking the girls’ first Number 1-hit. The single spent five consecutive weeks above the list, fighting off competition from Ultimate Kaos and Billie Piper. The release of the song was paired with unnecessary drama, as the media speculated over a feud between Brandy and Monica. They stated ongoing differences caused a fight, but that is not yet confirmed by the girls themselves. Regardless, as of this week, the single has amassed over 90,000 points.
