Effervescence - April 18th, 2024

Welcome to Effervescence! This week we go a little crazy for England when it comes to music at least. Today's countdown includes some of the greatest music made by English artists and English institution anthems still played across pubs to this day in celebration of April 23rd's St. Georges Day!

Noteworthy cultural notes for this week:

  • St. Georges Day is on Tuesday, April 23rd
  • It is the 30th anniversary of the first Oasis single, 'Supersonic', this week. Ironic that it comes on the week where we celebrate English music right here on the chart. It may even enter The Official Chart on April 19th. If it gets into the Top 30, it's a bigger hit in 2024 than it was 30 years ago!
  • I watched Argylle this week. It has a hell of a soundtrack to it and on a normal week may have pushed a couple of throwbacks into Effervescence.  Alas, with it being St. Georges, they didn't make it into the 40 due to the English classics but I want to highlight that the following tracks very nearly did chart this week:

• ‘You’re My Everything’ – Barry White

• ‘Let’s Dance’ – David Bowie

• ’Now and Then’ – The Beatles. I especially love the use of this in the movie. The melody plays throughout like a Bond theme does throughout the Bond movie they're attached to laced into the score. Great!

• ‘Electric Energy’ – Ariana DeBose, Boy George, Nile Rogers. The best of the original tracks in the movie.

• ‘Run’ – Leona Lewis. The scene this is used in reminded me a lot of the closing scenes in Kingsman: The Secret Service which used 'The Land of Hope and Glory' in a similarly wacky scene with plenty of explosions of color.

Happy St. Georges Day to all!

Ahoy, Maxon!

Well, glad to see another biggest hits from the past: #1 "Supersonic"; #3 "Bohemian Rhapsody"; #5 "Hey Jude"; #8 "Bitter Sweet Symphony"; and, especially, #10 "Tubthumping" is really great for me! 👍

Oh, I guess, Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo, Ariana Grande, etc, will always debut at the highest positions, and it doesn't depend on how it sounds. Why are we surprised that these singers always top the Billboard and other world charts. 😄
So, the debuts of Dua Lipa and Perrie Edwards were absolutely expected. Because she's from the 'Little Mix'. 😁

I haven't heard Sabrina Carpenter's new single yet because she hasn't released an implicit version of the song. These songs are not available for playing on Apple Music, that's why I just skip such songs.
Still don't have an implicit version. 😔

Also, I'm very interested, why you prefer Spotify over Apple Music or YouTube Music? These platforms are more popular in the United States.

And from now on, Becky's latest single has been added to my playlist. It also debuted on the European charts only this week. But maybe it appeared in the UK Official Singles Chart earlier, I don't know. I guess, Mimi Webb is from there too.

Thanks for your new chart and have a good mood!

Ahoy, Alex!

You picked out many of the tracks coming in for St. Georges Day, criminally underappreciated outside of England. They go bonkers for St. Patrick's Day here, so why not extend the love I say?!? It was likely to be 'Wonderwall' that entered but when I saw 'Supersonic' was getting real-life promotion as it's the 30th anniversary it was an easy decision to switch the tracks and of course, if there's real-life love it added the momentum need to push it to top spot - two tracks with that immortal voice in this weeks chart, love that!

I hear you on the artists you mentioned. I guess I do have a bit of that with Dua Lipa. I like up-tempo music and she does a lot of that. She's also English so that gave the track a push too. It very nearly got top spot and will be there or thereabouts next week with 'Supersonic' likely to nosedive. I feel 'Training Season' was a little weaker so it only got #4 in my chart and slipped out relatively quickly. I do like 'Illusion'. I think it's a step up but still definitely not 'Houdini', or 'Dance The Night' which I feel absolutely deserved their #1 positions and long chart runs.

Olivia Rodrigo, I don't feel as attached but I do absolutely love the GUTS album. She delved into a new direction more rocky and edgy with angsty lyrics and a sarcastic self-depreciation I really appreciate. It's both cool and funny. I doubt she will continue in this direction so we will have to see if her releases hit the right note for me.

Ariana Grande, I don't agree. She is nowhere to be seen this week and hasn't been much recently. I find her music wishy-washy and it quickly becomes unappealing to me. I got whipped up with a bit of hysteria with 'Yes, And?' earlier this year and did have it enter at #1. It's a decision I regretted quite quickly and has not only seen me take a more conservative approach to Ariana's music which all leaves the chart quickly (We Can't Be Friends' 3 weeks and peaking at #11, and 'Bye' one week at #33) but also not immediately giving new entries the #1 spot as I only want tracks I genuinely enjoy to get that spot. You'll notice 'Team Side', 'obsessed', 'We Will Rave', 'You Love Who You Love', 'Never Be Alone', and 'Love Hurt Repeat' - every #1 since outside of special throwback weeks since 'Yes, and?' all entered in lower positions and rose to #1 once I was confident I'd be okay with it.

I got back into current music more in January '23 so I actually know very little about Little Mix. I am educating myself on my missing years slowly but surely so I am sure will have a deeper dive at some point. The entry for 'Forget About Me' was based purely on the track alone as I have no preconceived opinions. It's pleasant enough. Reminds me a lot of recent poppy singer-songwriter music from artists such as FLETCHER and Dylan Conrique.

Sabrina Carpenter is going to jump up big time next week. Her non-Englishness held it back this week. I'm with you on predominantly listening to the clean/radio versions of the music I listen to, Not exclusively though, if I can only get the explicit version it is what it is but I will check every so often for a clean version to those songs. I hope one will come so you too can enjoy this track. I may tire of it, Sabrina's recent music is ver similar to Ariana Grande's and you know how quickly I tire of that but right not 'Espresso' is a nice breezy, summery, fun pop song that is out Ariana-ing Ariana at her own game. Ha!

I will always try to avoid Apple. I don't think the way they have tried to monopolize everything with non-compatible formats or their software to go with their hardware. Poor form, there are other companies in the same fields that do not try to force you to never leave and allow you to make the choice you want to. I prefer to live that way. So Apple Music is a no-go. YouTube music. I don't know, I have used the site for my videos about movies and football, and Eurovision recently for years, but not music unless I want to watch the music video. Spotify checks all my boxes, it's easy to use and has an aesthetically pleasing look and feel. There is nothing I want to do that it does not allow me to do so will continue to be the outlet of choice for me for the foreseeable future. I also like that it is largely owned by its creators which is not a conglomerate corporation or refreshingly not American. It's refreshing to have a little variation. Long may it remain that way.

'Outside of Love' has been knocking about for a few weeks now. It's okay, definitely not in the upper echelon of Becky Hill tunes. 'Mistake' is the new one from Mimi Webb. Another English singer. It's a decent track but also got a bit of momentum this week for St. Georges Day soundtrack favoritism. So far, the track has not charted.

Thank you for stopping by and for your comment!

Have a great weekend!

Ahoy, YoCheese, and welcome along!

Quickly first, would you like me to refer to you as simply 'Yo', maybe 'Cheese', or 'Cheesy', or the whole thing as above?

The Eurovision ramp-up is truly in effect now and will be reflected in this week's chart too as we build to the big week. It's insane how quickly it has arrived!

I really appreciate you stopping by and for your comment.

Take care!
