Glass Animals’ “Heat Waves” holds on at Number 1 on this week its chart. Upon initial release, the song seemed to fly under the radar, only barely peaking inside the Top 40. After newfound success on TikTok, however, the British band have arguably claimed the sleeper hit of the year. With over thirty combined streams, “Heat Waves” earns a second week atop the chart, finishing ahead of Elton John and Dua Lipa their “Cold Heart”. Olivia Rodrigo rounds out the Top 3 with the incredible “traitor”, which returns to its original peak for a second week.
With the new James Bond film No Time To Die in cinemas and its original soundtrack released on vinyl, Billie Eilish soars back into the charts with her Bond theme of the same name, reaching a new peak at Number 5. It originally peaked at Number 9, supported by a single vinyl release, and stayed on the charts for twelve weeks. “No Time To Die” its newfound success is further supported by an accompanying title sequence designed by the brilliant Daniel Kleinman, which features iconic imagery calling back to Dr. No and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Following its new peak, Billie Eilish becomes the second singer of the Daniel Craig-era to reach the Top 5 with a Bond song – the first to do so being Adele’s “Skyfall” which debuted at Number 1.
At Number 15, “Hyperventilatie”-singer Antoon debuts with his newest song “Zo Ben Jij”. He is supported by Dutch newcomer Sterre, who previously worked with popular rapper Kevin on “Loco” in 2019. At Number 29, Kali Uchis and SZA combine forces on the sensual “fue major”. Both artists reached new heights this year; Uchis scored her first Top 40-entry with the viral hit “telepatía” while SZA earned her first Number 1-hit on Doja Cat’s “Kiss Me More”. At Number 38, rapper Donnie collaborates with Dutch folk singer René Froger on “Bon Gepakt”; a classic sing-a-long song that will surely find success in the pubs. It’s not the first time Donnie worked with a popular folk singer; he previously scored a Top 40-hit alongside Frans Duijts on “Frans Duits”.
To celebrate the release of the new James Bond film and the resurgence of Billie Eilish her “No Time To Die” on the charts, I have decided to take a closer look at the history of Bond themes on my personal list. In 1995, Tina Turner and Bono & the Edge brought Bond into the modern age with “GoldenEye”, a classic Bondian song with a 90s twist. It was an enormous hit on this list, peaking at Number 2 and spending twenty-four weeks inside the Top 40. Success continued with Sheryl Crow’s “Tomorrow Never Dies”, which also reached second place. In 1999, at the turn of the millennium, Garbage shot to Number 1 with “The World Is Not Enough”, marking it the first Bond-song to peak atop the chart. Madonna and Chris Cornell also reached the Top 10 with their respective Bond-themes, although they failed to reach the heights of Tina Turner or Garbage. In 2012, Adele shot straight to Number 1 with “Skyfall”. It spent four consecutive weeks atop the chart and went double-platinum; easily making it the best-scoring Bond theme on my chart. Other notable entries include Propellerheads’ remix of “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” and Sam Smith their Shirley Bassey-esque ballad “Writing’s On The Wall” which barely missed the Top 10. Hey Link! :)
I love seeing 'Heat Waves' at the top for another week, along with that massive re-entry at #5 for 'No Time To Die'.
The big climb into the Top 10 for 'Love Nwantiti [Ah Ah Ah]' is also really cool!
Amazing chart as usual.
I look forward to the next one!
