Spice Girls and Aqua fight for this week’s Number 1

The Spice Girls earn a fifth consecutive week at Number 1 with Spice Up Your Life. The hit is the girls’ sixth Number 1-hit on this list, following big successes such as Wannabe and 2 Become 1. The girls fend off Aqua and their hit Barbie Girl, which now enters a second consecutive week at Number 2. Nonetheless, it is still a largely successful week for Aqua as their single Doctor Jones becomes their second Top 10-entry at Number 10.

Diana King scores her third Top 10-entry with I Say a Little Prayer. The song is a cover of the original Dionne Warwick, which was covered many times. One of the most famous artists to ever cover this hit was Aretha Franklin, whose version peaked at Number 4 on the Billboard 100. Diana King her version is very different from Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin’s, as this one has a distinct 90s vibe to it. Diana King has entered the Top 10 twice before with the Platinum-certified hits Shy Guy and Ain’t Nobody. Diana King her newest effort peaks at Number 8 this week.

All Saints score the highest debut of the week. All Saints is an English-Canadian girl group formed in London in 1993 consisting of Melanie Blatt, Shaznay Lewis, Nicole Appleton and Natalie Appleton. The girls initially struggled to find commercial success, but their newest hit Never Ever is making them an international sensation. The group's debut single I Know Where It's At broke them into the mainstream, reaching Number 4 on the UK Singles Chart and Number 28 on this list. Their second single Never Ever, though, launched them worldwide, peaking at Number 1 in the UK and Australia. The girls are becoming a massive hit throughout Europe and more success is expected to come soon. On this list, All Saints’ Never Ever opens at Number 12 this week.

The Backstreet Boys receive a Platinum Certification for Everybody (Backstreet's Back). The song served as the boys’ comeback single following months without new music. The song had huge opening numbers around the world and became one of the boys’ biggest hits to date. On this list, Everybody (Backstreet's Back) became the group their third single to peak at Number 2. As of this week, the single has amassed over 65,000 points. It is the third-best-scoring single by a boy band of this year, only behind Tearin’ Up My Heart by *NSYNC and When I Die by No Mercy.

Elton John receives a Gold Certification for Something About the Way You Look Tonight / Candle in the Wind 1997. The song serves as a tribute to the late Princess Diana of Wales, who died in a horrible car crash earlier this year. Elton John his tribute became the fastest-selling single in the UK, selling 658,000 copies on its first day of release, and over 1.5 million in its first week. The chart success in the United States is similar, the single debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 with first week sales at 3.5 million copies. The global proceeds from the song going towards Diana's charities. On this list, Elton John spent two weeks at Number 1 with his double-sided single. As of this week, the song has amassed over 40,000 points.
